After a great start out of the gate going up 7-0 on the road, the Bucs had a series of mental mistakes that eventually cost them the game. They lost the turnover 3-0, and you just can’t do that against a really good team like the Saints.
The loss spoiled the debut of Tom Brady as a Buc, who gets a fair share of the blame for some questionable decision making on two interceptions. We also examine the play of the offensive line where rookie Tristan Wirfs excelled in a rookie debut and Donovan Smith had a rough afternoon.
Tampa Bay’s defense was solid, but there was just one or two mistakes that hurt them from staying in the game. A concern could be had about Jordan Whitehead’s bad penalty or Jamel Dean’s hiccup on a pass play down the field, though the secondary overall played well with a job well done by Sean Murphy-Bunting, Carlton Davis, and rookie Antoine Winfield. Davis in particular was great against Michael Thomas.
Another mishap occurred on special teams this year, and there’s a debate in this episode about if you should be a little worried about the Bucs’ pass rush after not getting much pressure. You can hear it all in the Pewter Nation Podcast.
