The Bucs have added two veterans pass catchers to their practice squad, bolstering the team’s depth. Wide receiver Breshad Perriman and tight end Darren Fells will join the team soon. Unfortunately that also means that two current players must be released. On Wednesday, the team announced they have released wide receiver John Hurst and tight end Deon Yelder.

Hurst was with the Bucs in camp last year, but didn’t make the final roster. He was added to the practice squad after final cuts, but was nabbed by the Chargers in November. Los Angeles waived Hurst in August, and the Bucs added him back shortly after. Hurst has never appeared in an NFL game.
Yelder was a solid depth signing at the end of September. He’s been elevated for three games this season, once as a COVID promotion. If the Bucs were going to bring Yelder up again, they would need to promote him to the active roster and release a player currently on the 53. That was unlikely to happen, so replacing him made the most sense. Yelder had one catch for zero yards in 14 offensive snaps. He also chipped in 14 reps on special teams.
Hurst and Yelder will be subject to waivers. If Yelder clears, it’s a possibility he could return to the practice squad down the road.
The Bucs return to action on Sunday against the Washington Football Team.
