What looked to be a two-man race in training camp between LeSean McCoy and Dare Ogunbowale for the role of third down back may have just added a third player to an already crowded competition.

T.J. Logan has impressed Bruce Arians thus far in training camp, particularly with his running back skills. Logan has primarily been known as kick return specialist in his young career, and now he’s showing more to his game.

“T.J. Logan has looked really, really good running the ball and catching the ball,” Arians said. “People don’t really realize him as a running back, but he’s a hell of a running back and he’s not just a return man.”

We haven’t seen much from Logan as a running back either in his two years with the Arizona Cardinals where Arians drafted him in 2017, or with the Bucs. He had three rushes for 10 yards along with two receptions for 13 yards in 2019, so he’s mostly unproven.

Logan is already entrenched in a kick return battle with rookie seventh round pick Raymond Calais, and now could find himself getting more reps out of the backfield. His breakaway speed may pay dividends for him as Arians gives him increased opportunities. Arians would like to see Logan reach the full potential the coach saw back when the UNC back was originally drafted. Logan’s flashes of big play ability in college is why he was brought into Tampa last season and again for this year.

“We had high, high hopes for him in Arizona and then he broke his wrist in the Hall of Fame Game, and we lost him,” Arians said. “He was an acquisition I was very high on getting because of his return ability, and he’s a good gunner on special teams, but he’s a heck of a back. He can take it to the house whether it’s a run or a pass. He’s finding his niche pretty quickly.”
