It’s funny how sometimes you just have perfect timing in a situation. For the Bucs, it was the fact that safety Mike Edwards happened to be the player that was mic’d up for Sunday’s 20-10 win on the road against the Saints.

Cornerback Jamel Dean led the way with two interceptions on the afternoon. But it was Edwards who sealed the deal with a pick-six on Jameis Winston to put the Bucs ahead 20-3 late in the fourth quarter. When Edwards reached the end zone and celebrated with his teammates, it felt like that lead was insurmountable.

This was the third pick-six of Edwards’ career. He had two in the same game on back-to-back drives in a Week 2 win over the Falcons in Raymond James Stadium last season. That led to him being named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week. Edwards knows how to come up big in the clutch moments, as all three of his touchdowns occurred in the fourth quarter.

Among some of the highlights of his mic’d up video included a pregame conversation with corner Sean Murphy-Bunting, where he told his teammate “these things are certified!” in reference to Edwards’ own hands.

After his exuberant reaction to Dean’s two interceptions, some foreshadowing appeared shortly after. Right before he took the ball to the house, Edwards was sitting next to wide receiver Jaelon Darden where he confidently boasted that he was up next.

“How much you want to bet I get a pick right here?” Edwards said to Darden.

And after he celebrated in the end zone with the defense, Darden was one of the first offensive players to find him and hype Edwards up. The timing was everything.

Edwards recorded three tackles, a pass breakup and the highlight interception for a touchdown in the big win. Once again he showed why he’s already gotten the “ball hawk” moniker in his career and should continue to do so as an every-game starter.
