According to Kansas City Star beat writer Sam McDowell, the Bucs have signed free agent RB Darwin Thompson. The Chiefs had hoped to bring Thompson back after waiving him, but the diminutive back decided to head to Tampa Bay instead. Thompson will join the Bucs practice squad as the group’s lone running back.

So, remember when I wrote that article a few hours ago on the four roster cut players the Bucs should target? Thompson was the fifth name I left off the list because I thought he was going back to Kansas City. I’m disappointed in myself, I’ll be better in the future.
In all seriousness, Thompson is a signing to get excited about, for a practice squad player. A 1,000-yard rusher and 350-yard receiver during his final year at Utah State, Thompson was a fun watch during the pre-draft process. He’s a rocked up, 5-8, 200-pound back with good balance and agility in space.

Thompson has been mildly productive during his two seasons in Kansas City, with 64 carries for 225 yards and two touchdowns. He’s added 16 catches for 108 yards and another score as well. Thompson also played 144 snaps last year on special teams for the Chiefs, per PFF. He also returned one kickoff for 27 yards, but fumbled twice.
Perhaps the 24-year old running back saw the situation in Tampa Bay and realized he could compete for playing time next year. Ronald Jones, Leonard Fournette and Giovani Bernard are all entering contract years, and Ke’Shawn Vaughn hasn’t proven anything. If Thompson gets an opportunity and impresses this year, he could have a shot at the active roster in 2022. But right now, that’s a long way off.
