Spytek has had interviews with the Raiders and Vikings this offseason, with neither job coming to fruition. Entering his seventh season with the team, Spytek was lauded by head coach Bruce Arians for his part in the in-season additions the Bucs were able to make this year. Hit hard with injuries at multiple positions, Spytek and the front office found contributor after contributor for Tampa Bay.
Throughout the season, Arians had rave reviews for Spytek. Arians mentioned the excellent job Spytek and Licht did in acquiring talent all season.
“We had a lot of guys down all season,” Arians said. “Different guys have stepped up. Jason [Licht] and [John] Spytek and all those guys put together a hell of a roster. And we kept adding to it with veteran players as the season went along. I can’t say enough about our front office having a great roster.”
The Bucs made it through the wave of head coaching hires without losing Todd Bowles or Byron Leftwich. Although they weren’t as lucky with their assistant coaches, losing inside linebackers coach Mike Caldwell to Jacksonville as their defensive coordinator. Caldwell brought Cody Grimm, a former Tampa Bay safety and assistant on defense and special teams since 2019, with him.
Spytek won’t be considered the favorite in Pittsburgh. The Steelers are likely to promote either Brandon Hunt or Omar Khan to the GM role. Both Hunt and Khan have served for years in the Steelers front office.
