NFL Network’s Sara Walsh reported that Bucs defensive tackle Calijah Kancey, the team’s first-round pick this year, suffered a calf injury early Sunday morning during the defensive individual period. He was carted off the field and into the training room for further evaluation.

Kancey was holding his right calf, according to Fox Sports’ Greg Auman, and after taking a few steps the Bucs trainers brought the cart out to get him inside the facility without the rookie putting extra weight on his injured calf. Dustin Lewis posted video footage of Kancey’s injury as it happened.

The severity of Kancey’s injury is unknown at this time, but obviously the team is hoping it is just cramping rather than calf strain or tear.
Bucs Hope Calijah Kancey’s Injury Isn’t Serious And That He Isn’t Out Weeks

Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow just suffered a calf injury during Cincinnati’s training camp and is expected to miss several weeks. Tampa Bay nose tackle Vita Vea suffered a calf injury in camp years ago and also missed several weeks due to that injury.
Kancey, who was selected with the 19th overall pick, has made a great first impression during Bucs training camp, essentially living in the backfield on Wednesday, which was the team’s first practice. He is projected to be a starter alongside nose tackle Vita Vea and defensive tackle Logan Hall in Todd Bowles’ 3-4 defense.
Kancey, who is the subject of Pewter Report’s Camp Diary series, and Vea were starting tackles in the Tampa Bay’s nickel package. Those reps in nickel will now likely go to Hall instead.
Pewter Report will have an update on Kancey’s injury after practice.
