Bucs Had The Upper Hand In The Early Third Down Matchups

You’ll see how early in the game Bowles deployed man-heavy schemes to shut down the Lions’ third-down passing attack. Jamel Dean, Lavonte David and Carlton Davis III were all targeted in man coverage and all did their jobs well.

As the game wore on the Bucs transitioned to more zone coverages and Johnson and the Lions’ defense started to find more success in the middle of the field, converting more third downs and sustaining longer drives.

The Knockout Punch

Josh uses all of that to pose the theory that Johnson lured Bowels into putting more traffic in the middle to defend the Lions and Johnson was ready with the final nail in the coffin that ended up being a 45-yard bomb from quarterback Jared Goff to receiver Jameson Williams.
