Bucs head coach Todd Bowles joined the Pewter Report Podcast on Monday afternoon, and while he broke some news about joint practices, discussed some X’s and O’s and begrudgingly reflected back on Super Bowl LV, there might’ve been one surprise answer that he gave that will spark some debate among the Tampa Bay faithful.
That, of course, is which Bucs player he’d choose to team up with if he ever found himself in a street fight. Pewter Report’s Scott Reynolds asked the question, and after changing the parameters and picking a coach, Bowles gave a surprising answer when it came to the player.
“Does it have to be a player? Can it be a coach? The coach is Kevin Ross,” Bowles said of Tampa Bay’s cornerbacks coach. “Kevin Ross, he was a wrestler in high school, he was an all-state guy. Kev is Marvin Hagler, he’s Marvin Hagler Jr., so I’m okay going with Kev.
“And player, in a fight? I’m taking Godwin. I’m taking Chris Godwin.”

Had there been betting lines set on who Bowles’ answer to that question might be, the 6-foot-4, 347-pound Vita Vea might’ve been the favorite. A 6-foot-5, 320-pound athletic freak like Tristan Wirfs might’ve been up there too, as well as the nasty Luke Goedeke or the cut-up Yaya Diaby. But in this hypothetical, Bowles is taking the toughness of Chris Godwin.
“Vita’s got size, Chris has got toughness,” Bowles said when pressed on the decision not to choose Vea. “Vita is George Foreman and Chris is Muhammad Ali. That’s the difference. I’m not saying [Vea] is not tough and a brawler, but I think I’m taking Godwin. I’ll take Godwin, or I’ll take Lavonte [David].”
Picking a wide receiver was a surprise from the defensive-minded head coach, but to be fair, there’s no questioning the toughness of Chris Godwin.
