Each week following every Bucs game, Pewter Report will take a close look at the snap count distribution for Tampa Bay on offense and defense. We'll assess what we can learn from who played the most and least in the game.

Let's get a closer look at the Bucs players who received the highest and lowest number of snaps in the Bucs' 31-25 home loss to the Eagles, the first loss for Tampa Bay on the season. Some early poor play, including a blocked punt returned for a touchdown, put the Bucs behind from the start. And despite their great effort in the second half to make it a one score-game, one last mistake – a Baker Mayfield interception – cut that comeback short.

Bucs Offense

Bucs Week 4 O

If there was any thought of having Chris Godwin Jr. on a pitch count in his return to action after missing close to a year, this was not the case by any means. Godwin wound up playing 58 plays, which was 81% of the snaps, good for second-most among wide receivers after Emeka Egbuka led the way at 89%.

Godwin's 81% is actually more than what Mike Evans had been averaging over the previous two games. There was no doubt that he was rusty as Godwin had some drops and recorded just three catches for 26 yards on Sunday. But the fact that he was able to go the whole game should bode well for the offense in future weeks as he rounds into form.

Egbuka played the most and Tampa Bay tried to get him involved in the offense as much as possible, finally connecting on big play for a 77-yard touchdown in the second half. Sterling Shepard played his typical amount of snaps, going from 61% last game to 62% yesterday, and Tez Johnson saw an increase moving up to 32% with 23 plays. Shepard didn't have the impact like he did a week ago, as he made just two catches for for 14 yards. Johnson made his first career catch for eight yards, but that was it.

The player that saw a huge drop was Ryan Miller, going all the way down to 8% of the snaps.

Running back Bucky Irving was injured right before halftime but was able to go in the second half and had an electric 72-yard touchdown reception. It's not a surprise that he led the way at 61% of the snaps, but I'm curious if Rachaad White playing 41%, cutting the gap between the two significantly more than in recent games, was because of Irving's brief absence. This feels like how it should be between the two running backs.

Tight end Cade Otton nearly played as much as Baker Mayfield and the offensive line, coming in at 96% of the snaps. With Tristan Wirfs back at left tackle, the Bucs used their two-tight end sets with Payne Durham in just a little less, dropping to 21%. The tight ends have barely made an impact in the passing game besides blocking, as Otton recorded three catches for nine yards on Sunday.

Bucs Defense

Bucs

The Bucs pretty much had to play musical chairs with all the injuries they had at different positions. Cornerback Jamel Dean left the game early, so he only played 14 snaps and 25%. Rookie Benjamin Morrison took over for him and played very well, but then he had a hamstring injury later on in the game and played 68%. Jacob Parrish's numbers actually went down to 58% despite the maneuvering.  Zyon McCollum played the whole game.

Outside linebacker Haason Reddick exited early as well with a stinger, so he went down to a season-low 54% of the snaps, while Yaya Diaby picked it all the way up to 82%, much higher than previously. Chris Braswell got a big jump in playing time with Reddick out, moving up to 32% and Anthony Nelson played one percent more at 33%.

Tampa Bay's defensive line rotation evens out quite well and they were able to handle adjustments with injury each game. Keeping Vita Vea fresh was very important as he played 65%, which was 5% less than the week prior. He wound up with two sacks.

Logan Hall gutted it out at 58% despite being close to not playing. This cut into the time of Elijah Roberts slightly at 46%, but he was impactful when in. Leaving the game early was Greg Gaines, who suffered a pectoral injury, but he still was in for a typical amount at 54%. Elijah Simmons is being brought along, and he's been solid at 25%.

The only consistent was at inside linebacker and safety. Lavonte David played the whole game while Deion Jones would briefly come in for SirVocea Dennis. Safeties Antoine Winfield Jr. and Tykee Smith are hardly taken off the field, and understandably so.
