The Tampa Bay Bucs have waived injured veteran safety Raven Greene. NFL reporter Aaron Wilson had the news first.

Greene, who spent his first three years in Green Bay playing on defense and special teams, was signed this offseason to help Tampa Bay’s special teams coverage units. Greene signed a one-year, $850,000 deal with the Bucs, but missed the first week of training camp for personal reasons. He then returned to practice, but didn’t really stand out.

Instead, the Bucs have received great play from not only starters Antoine Winfield, Jr. and Jordan Whitehead, but also from key reserves like Mike Edwards, Javon Hagan and Ross Cockrell. With Whitehead and Greene missing the first part of camp, the Bucs moved Cockrell, the team’s fourth cornerback, to free safety where he has thrived. Cockrell leads the team with at least seven interceptions in training camp.

Greene suffered an injury in practice last week that made him miss Saturday’s preseason opener against Cincinnati. Hagan starred in that game with six tackles, three tackles for loss and an interception. Greene’s injury kept him out of practice on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and the Bucs waived him injured late Wednesday afternoon.

Tampa Bay claimed offensive lineman Brandon Walton off waivers from Pittsburgh to take Greene’s roster spot. Walton (6-5, 300) originally entered the league as a college free agent with the Buffalo Bills in 2020. He spent the majority of the 2020 season on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ practice squad and was with Pittsburgh until being waived on Aug. 17. A Largo, Florida, native, Walton attended Seminole High School before playing collegiately at Florida Atlantic, where he earned first team All-Conference-USA honors as a redshirt senior in 2019.
