Lovie Smith was introduced as the Buccaneers' 10th head coach on Monday. PewterReport.com's Scott Reynolds analyzed his initial press conference in Tampa Bay, and points out five important things that Smith had to say. https://www.pewterreport.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=9557:&Itemid=15
Nice job Scott, good to hear what Coach is thinking. Some of what I've read so far, "power running game" and taking shots down the field sounds familiar, does it not? I really look forward to seeing what Coach and Shelton Quarles come up with concerning our OL. Many, including myself, saw our OL as a strength going into the fall last season. Obviously it did not work out as well as we thought it would. I also believe the Bucs will bring in another QB but see Glennon as a guy who Tedford can work with. Tall and smart fits the bill, doesn't it?Hester makes sense but for his age, already going into, what, his 8th season? And I have to believe improving the pass rush at the DE position is something they'll be looking at.Keep bringing it Pewter Report! It's nice to be looking forward again.

Agree with this Garv, and that makes me even more excited. It sounds like Lovie has a similar philosophy to his predecessor but he's (hopefully) a better Coach. He's proven he can win and what this team was lacking it seemed was the ability to maximize its talent and outcoach other teams. The fact the philosophy is the same helps in that we already have the players for the system. There is no need to build from the ground up. And that is exciting as its not starting over as much as its taking over

Good point. Much of this team is a great fit for Lovie, as if he built it himself. All the better for a quick turnaround.
I said this with Schiano, I'll say it again here - most coaches "philosophy," or at least what they'll share publicly, is just coach-speak.

Yep, a lot of what Lovie said could be almost word for word what Schiano said (physical team, power running game and taking shots...). Did find the details interesting of how he decided on Tedford, and his comment that he wants an athlete on QB. We'll see whether that was coach speak, or a hint that he'll be looking at a more athletic QB in the draft. I'm thinking coach speak, because Tedford's offence seems more designed for a pocket passer (unless that time they spent in the basement changed some of Tedford's philosophies)...
There seems to be some question as to whether Tedford is an NFL ready QB guru. I certainly don't see him as that. Not even sure I think he is the best choice for OC. IMO, we need OL more than we need to draft a QB this year. Especially at LT and a guard. Have zero interest in Manziel - reminds me of Griffin and the 2 QB for the Jets. Its a team game and Manziel has not shown his willingness to be that.Don't remember the offense being the ones who caused those 4 loses. IIRC, it was individual players screwing up one play at the worst possible times and it started in game one with David. One of the things Schiano did do well was finally get rid of the crap and now some are suggesting we bring in Vick? Can't believe it. Trust PR will give us a detailed run down on all new coaches hired. Some of the suggested names, I know zero about.

Everyone wants to be fast, physical and smart. I'm yet to see the interview where a coach says they want to be slow, physical and fast or something. Thing is wanting those things is true so while it is mostly meaningless it is correct and true. When he talks about defense being able to get you to 8 wins ( 10 with good teams!) that is wrong and false. When he says he wants to be like SEA or SF he has misdiagnosed how they got to their wins. The thing is this is worrisome from him given his history and the concerns about him.
Lovie was more positive regarding Glennon in the presser than he has been in other interviews which occurred subsequent to the intro.

Arizona's Offense was the 20th ranked O (Football Outsiders). Second best D. 10 wins. Jets. Cincy's split was 17 offense, 5 D. I agree with you generally on this, but you are overstating things.
Dalbuc, I think your line about "misdiagnosed" assumes that he thinks they were defense only. To me it's about style - physical, power-running, athlete at QB position. He mentioned all 3 of these things at the press conference. But as before - we are guessing. He's not showing cards beyond that Alex Gibbs won't be designing our running game.
Hard to take much from public statments of a coach, but interesting discussion in this thread
Dalbuc, I agree with Booker. I took it as a sign that he recognized the importance of offence. I understood him as saying that with a mediocre offence and a great defence you could get to 8 wins (10 with special teams) - but if you wanted more (ie. to go to the playoffs) you need a very good offence. I think that was his point.
Couldn't help but chuckle in regard to his comment about using Revis correctly.

Ahhh but never ask about offense. I don't care about running the ball. ARI was 13 th passing. Cincy was the 8th passing team.
