I don't know - don't see a lot of our ex-draft picks dominating anywhere else. Talib's the only one I think who has played well, right?
I don't know enough about Hickey to say one way or the other, but I think a lot of the time in Tampa the problem is player development and scouting takes the blame.
Not sure, Hickey was here for many years in several capacities. I used to wonder whether some of the Gruden-era picks were Allen overruling Hickey, but then when Dom took over Hickey was his right hand guy and I don't think they had a very good draft record together, especially if you discount the recent draft for Schiano's potential influence. At the end of his tenure, there just are not many players on this team who stand out as true blue chippers(Edit: or a BR points out, there are not even many of Hickey's picks succeeding big time on other teams)
The only documented pick I'm aware of with Hickey attached to it was Gaines Adams. That was Hickey and Kiffin, I believe v. Gruden.
I think we've jettisoned a couple of offensive linemen who caught on (I'm thinking one went to the Pats), and a corner or two (Ravens?). I wouldn't say we had talent to spare, either. I guess that happens with any team, but it seems like some teams have a philosophy of picking up guards in the middle rounds and they mold them into pro bowlers, while we spend premium picks and still end up disappointed.

That was Glazers, Hickey and Kiffin as I recall. Glazers (Joel iirc) favorite was Simeon, and with his departure he wanted the replacement right then... and the bucs had Gaines. Kiffin was a big fan as I recall - heard he was very vocal about drafting Adams.

Not that we drafted (since Hickey's been running the show at least). I think you might be thinking of Russ Hochstein, but that was in 2001. Unless you want to be sick, don't go back and look at the 2006 - 2009 Buc drafts.

BR, since you mentioned the Gaines Adams draft of one that is assigned or "documented" to Hickey, aren't all the drafts really assigned to Hickey given his role? In other words, he was the guy in the building, at least for some of this time, responsible for identifying the talent, right? I mentioned that maybe he was overruled some, but at least in general terms, wouldn't he be the guy where the buck stops, so to speak, as far as identifying draft talent?
I don't mean the Gaines Adams draft, I meant the specific pick. It's kind of been my mantra here in recent weeks, but personnel people are hard to evaluate. We honestly have to rely on reporting I think to a great extent, though I think you can make a case against Hickey based on what we know on things not having to do with specific player evaluations. Remember a few years ago when PR talked about how they kind of hid from the media? Well guess what? That comes with the territory of being a GM.The thing about 2006 - 2008 drafts (Hickey with Allen as GM) is that they Buc coaches were reportedly heavily involved in the process. So while I have to think Hickey's at least partly to blame for those classes (he's in charge of scouting after all), we don't really know what's on him and what's not. For example (and this pre-dates Hickey's promotion) I recall reading about Muir working out and evaluating OL guys in 2003. So we draft Nimmo, Sean Mahan, and Austin King. Is that because the scouts and the college director/GM built the board that way, or because of Muir? Remember when Muir reportedly was pounding the table on Chris Colmer?
Who picked Kyle Arrington- UDFA?
The Pats. We didn't draft him. We actually stole him from the Eagles practice squad. I'm guessing since he came from Hofstra, that Raheem had a huge amount to do with his arrival.
Also on Arrington, not sure how good he actually is. Being a starter/spot-starter on a mediocre pass defense in a division with no good QBs - not sure how big that is. He did have a lot of picks in 2011, but then again so did Wayne Haddix. Reports from Pats' sources I've seen are all over the map.

Gaines was drafted in April.Simeon was released on the eve of training camp, after they had drafted Adams.
Exactly
IIRC Hickey was in charge of the scouting Department from 2006-2011. What an awful era in drafting for the Bucs. Many, many high picks wasted. Unlike the Cadillac Williams pick in 2005 you cannot attribute Gaines Adams failure to injury. Brian Price had a pre-existing injury the Bucs were caught with their pants down on. Adams and Tanard Jackson were, allegedly, major pot smokers which may have led to a...lack of motivation. Aqib Talib, talented as he is, was one gun shooting accusation from being out of the NFL. Sabby Piscitelli was one of the worst starters in the NFL in his time playing. Myron Lewis and Dexter Jackson were some of the worst Buccaneer draft picks in the modern era. Hickey can hang his hat on(as Scouting Dir) a Gerald McCoy pick that an 8 year old could have figured out with a subscription to any mock draft site and a Mike Williams pick, that made up to the disaster that was trading up for a below-average WR in Arrelious Benn. All the while Hickey made a fool out of himself by asking Myrone Rolle how it felt to "quit on his team" after he went to Oxford because he earned a Rhodes Scholarship. Funny how the drafts got better immediately after Hickey left the college scouting position in 2012, arguably our best in the past 20 years. Good luck to the Dolphins...they're going to need it.
Yeah, Hickey had a TERRIBLE run. Who knows how much input he had, but no matter what the Dolphins had better hope he was overrule on a lot of the Bucs' draft picks.
