I don't know much about what Goldson did two years ago, but this season I thought refs focused upon him unfairly to the point where it was obvious.

Malicious headhunters do tend to garner more attention...

Hit me up when McCoy starts getting roughing penalties AFTER the whistle blows. ;)Little different when talking about QBs getting hit, vs WRs/TEs/RBs taking head shots from Goldson. Penalties in both regards are extreme, but most of Goldson's penalties are understandable, seeing how he flies into the picture with his head lowered. Pass rushers on the other hand can crawl into the QBs legs to tackle them, and still get roughing penalties, as former Buc Michael Bennett learned when he sacked Matt Ryan in week 10.

The pass defense improved from 32nd to 17th with questionable schemes and poor coaching. Also they were among the best at getting turnovers. I expect a top 10 unit in 2014 with the change in leadership. I'm confident Goldson will be a key component in a greatly improved Defense.

Chace - I think you might be wrong on this one.  I don't see Goldson's issues as after the play.  And I do think the refs are targeting him unfairly

No. Not all of his penalties happen after the whistle. 3 of his 7 in 2012 with SF were of that variety.  1 of them this past season in the Miami game was extra curricular. I dont see GMC(as mentioned by Vin) getting those types of penalties. I dont see him getting into shoving matches or headbutting players who dont have their helmets on. My point in bringing up his extra curriculars was to point out that he is a hothead and a loose cannon. Having a headhunter back there with a short fuse had some value 5 years ago, but it has little-to-none in 2014. He is simply a one trick pony, whose one trick has been deemed illegal. I disagree that its "unfair". HE and HE alone has put himself in a position where even if it looks questionable or violent, he is going to get flagged. That is the reputation HE has earned...and most of the called penalties against him this year certainly looked legit to me.

We have the money to pay him then some so why would you want to cut a former pro bowler, and put dead money on your cap? We didn't see the best Goldson has to offer. Quite frankly Sheridan didn't put his players in a position to succeed, so I think everyone on D will play much better this year.

I'm not buying that all of players weren't put in position to succeed. LVD and Foster were in good positions all year. Barron was in a position to succeed. So were Banks and Revis. I'll accept that argument, to a degree, for the DL stunts wth the DL...but the back 7 weren't at a disadvantage schematically like the DL was when it came to stunting. I will agree that cutting hm makes no sense if you have to pay his salary regardless, but hopefully Love and his staff look past the mirage that he is a top tier safety, and look at this as a put up or GTFO year for Goldson.

Chace, I think you make good points and I cant say I even necessarily disagree, but I mentioned the GMC penalties not because they are equivalent, but rather just because the focus on Goldson's penalties might be overblown, in part because of his reputation. GMC's penalties costs the team as well, but he is a soft-spoken All-Pro.I think that Goldson was typical Dominik free agent move i.e, "we need a veteran safety, so let me get 'the best' veteran available. . . . Goldson is a 49ers pro Bowler etc."  I don't think Dom's selection of Goldson was made with the rule change in mind and I agree with you the rule change impacts Goldson more than the QB rule changes impact GMC because Goldson has a reputation. I say that though because its not just the calls, the rule change even impacts Goldson's play.  I can recall a play late in the season where he missed a tackle on a receiver and it looked to me like he essentially pulled up, as if he was thinking about the fines/penalties etc. That's not good, especially for a safety. I don't know enough about him as a player to know if he is a "one trick dinosaur," so to speak, or of he can adapt.  I think his impact to the team likely goes beyond the hits because he is obviously a leader, but is that outweighed by potentially less effective play AND penalties? Perhaps

I'll agree with you on LVD and Foster. Not with Banks - I felt he was left on an island way too often. The one player I think might be in a bit of trouble is Foster. Not sure if he'll fit in as well.

His penalties overblown? Possibly by some. I happen to think that the biggest issue is his style of play. A very reckless style that:A. Results in personal foul penalties. B. Results in the injury of fellow teammates.C. Results in missed tackles. He has a history of missing tackles, even before the refs started making him miss them... ;)

I defer to you on the part in bold, I honestly don't know. I agree on his style of play, but when I said "overblown" I meant the impact his penalties had on the last season

Goldson will be fine.  Especially in a Lovie coached D.  You don't just get rid of all-pro players for the sake of getting rid of them - especially when the replacement is friggin Tandy...I'm more worried about our pass rush, Oline, and another option in the passing game.  No need to get rid of Goldson and create yet another need...

I totally agree. In one of Schiano's pressers he all but admitted Goldson was brought here solely for his hitting style. STYLE, not ability. It is now up to Frazier to coach him on how to maintain the impact of his tackles but on a legal trajectory. The player is coachable. That's all that matters. And that's what the new regime sees as it core requirement. At least that's what I got from the latest presser Smith gave. Go Bucs.
