Just saw a post from Jay Glazer confirming it...I read the guy's bio and the stories as he interviewed in Chicago. Seems like he's moved around a lot -- maybe that's a normal trajectory for a personnel guy. Was fired by Philly in '08.Then again the Cardinals seriously outperformed at least what I perceived to be their expectations. Defense had all kinds of talent. Licht definitely has some pedigree with where he's worked.

I liked the article when Licht was interviewing for the Bears job. http://espn.go.com/chicago/nfl/story/_/id/7509720/jason-licht-real-change-chicago-bears

Jay Glazer ?@JayGlazer 59m"Btw, the Bucs job Licht has been tabbed for is a "real" GM job as he has control of the draft & other personnel decisions."Ok, are we playing with semantics?  Is "control" of the draft not the same as "final decisions on draft"?  Scott Reynolds specifically said in the chat room that Lovie will make the final draft decisions.  Scott obviously had a very reliable source for that.  So what's the deal?

The deal is that it's always a collaborative effort between a HC and GM. If they get into too many situations where one has to pull rank on the other, then they're screwed anyway. I have read in several places that the GM position would have draft authority and Lovie would have final 53 authority. SR is the only one I've seen to contradict that.

I think you're right... Lovie probably has something written into his contract that codifies his right to a say in the draft. Not sure what that would look like, but the bottomline is they wouldn't have hired a guy that can mesh with Lovie. No matter the contractual set up, all successful teams have a good mesh of coach/personnel guys. I'm totally confident they'll mesh.

I always thought the GM acquires the talent and the coaches train, evaluate then field the stronger players(None in-depth overview). If that's true there will be powwows between them all throughout the drafting and free agency process. I may be wrong but this staff appears, on paper, to have matured past the power struggling phase of their careers and are focused on building a winning team. Egos aside I think they will gel nicely.

Love the hire. He comes from organisations that build through the draft, look at how both Andy Reid and Bill Bellichick love to trade down to gain more picks - could be positive and negative if he keeps that trait.

There were people on this board who were claiming the new GM selection didn't matter because he was only going to be a figure head. Some people saying Lovie is the GM. They were wrong. PewterReport had basically claimed Lovie had ultimate authority over personnel (which still wouldn't make him GM, but I digress).

I guess I skipped past the PR report, but this is ESPN:"Lovie Smith's contract contains a clause that gives him final say over all personnel matters on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 53-man roster, according to league sources"In other words, the G cant force hi to play a certain player, right? Why would ESPN report it with that specificity if he had "total control" over the draft etc?

I think the Glazers have done so much stupid crap over the years that it's not surprising that people think the organization is dysfunctional from the top down.... Somehow, I think they managed to get it right this time, in spite of themselves.

Scott said ultimate authority over the draft, too.  If Scott is wrong, I'm wrong.  But I'll wait for Scott's explanation first.  Again, from last week's chat, SR, " Smith will have final say-so in terms of personnel and drafting, so he's running the show."

Every other report claimed it is a real GM position. A candidate with Licht's credentials wouldn't accept the job if it were just a piss-boy position.
