PR, if Carl Nicks retires - do the Bucs suffer the $7,071,000 cap hit or is he just wiped from the books and the Bucs gain $9 mill in cap relief? How does that work? Are there any other moves the Bucs could do short of an injury settlement that would allow them not to carry all that dead money this season?

I don't believe there is cap relief because the cash was already paid to him. If he were to retire I do think he forfeits the $6mil guaranteed payment vs. injury he would be due and the accompanying cap hit.

If he retires it would mean he can no longer play AND the Buccaneers would save a ton of CAP money. Too bad there are NOT only two choices....1) he retires 2) he plays like a 50 million dollar guard. It just is not that simple.

I'm thinking he'll return, if his rehab goes well. I've heard this new staff has been in heavy contact with him. The guy loves the game.

He can love the game all he wants but it doesn't change anything, he's done.  Even if he manages to see the field he won't be on it for long.

I believe this is the case from what we have been able to gather. The Bucs will give him all they can to get back on the field as they are going to pay him regardless.

I think if he plays he's a $9mil cap hit. If he can invoke in injury guarantee, it's a $13 mil cap hit ($7mil prorated bonus plus the guarantee). If he can't invoke the injury guarantee it's a $7mil cap hit if he's cut. Can't see the latter.
