During the entire draft process much was made of Winston’s “football intelligence” - ability to read a defense and his anticipator skills while throwing receivers open. The hardest transitions for quarterbacks is adjusting to the under center game of the National Football League.There is no denying his arm talent, football intelligence, mental toughness, lack of conscience, or comfort in chaos.Winston demonstrates solid pocket presence and is adept at showing great pocket maneuverability. But the single most important part of a quarterback's mechanics is his footwork. Good footwork will allow a passer to be more accurate.Winston is so wildly inconsistent with his footwork it often appears that he is out of sync. When watching his All 22 film from last season it often appears at times that his footwork is one step ahead or behind the rest of his body and mind at times. Which caused the wide swaths and periods of inaccuracy.Dirk Koetter noted that Winston is working to improve his footwork this off-season and Winston himself has taken steps to focus on his footwork by working with Tim Grover, of Attack Athletics on improving his foot speed and becoming smoother in the pocket.If Winston can demonstrate better footwork, he will have his biggest jump in improvement from year one to year two. It comes down to repetitive repetitions and muscle memory under duress. If he can master it he will become an even better and more accurate quarterback while also completing more deep throws as the offense becomes more prolific and efficient.
