"The Right Stuff" movie kind of made this famous. One of the remarkable points about this F-104 altitude record breaking aircraft is that it did so by taking off on its own and landing on its own.
One good comment in the comments section of this youtube is that the F-104 was the basis for the U2 spyplane.
