How would you explain his choice here?
He’s at his own concocted “press conference” at his own golf club, with a friendly audience cheering him on and already booing the press (lol) and he tells a COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY LIE about something he’s been called out on before and that leads to him having to make this “tail between his legs” exit

The exit is the reporting now from the “press conference”
So, what’s the thought process:
1) even a losing encounter with the press is helpful because he can spin it to some as “enemy of the people”
2) he actually thinks he’s telling the truth (ie he thinks his bill was Choice, not an expansion of Choice)?
3) he’s just a victim of his own rambling, unprepared approach so he just returned to a common stump phrase and got trapped?
(It’s so obvious that he’s using a “press conference” to campaign that of course the press is going to kill him, given the chance. All the more so when he has members booing them lol)
