Astrophysicists, over last few decades have learned that our solar system isn't arranged like most other solar systems. Most of them have Jovian planets spiraling into the inner solar system. Hence, any planets that may have formed either got thrown out of the solar system, or crashed into either the central star or the inward spiraling Jovian planet.
With the above finding that Jupiter formed a lot slower, we may have an answer. The article goes on to suggest that this can help explain how Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune also formed later on.
