Early in Quantum Mechanics, the calculation of the magnetic moment of the Electron led to the renormalization problem. Had Richard Feynman done nothing else, but solve this problem, he would have been considered one of the greatest physicists ever. It's solution led to unification of the quantum forces - electromagnetism, and the strong and weak nuclear forces(we're still puzzling over how to combine gravity).

The last quantum particle to find to finish off the standard model was the Higgs; this was done a few years ago; here, we have the contribution of the Higgs particle to the electrons magnetic moment!
