"Their result has several important consequences. In particular, it predicts that the protons are stable against decaying into other elementary particles, and that magnetic monopoles exist."

Proton decay has been a big thorn in the side of unification theorists. The underground experiments haven't been finding any proton decays . . . if this theory is correct, then Magnetic monopoles exist; if they exist, they are massive, and become the number one candidate for Dark Matter.

There's more exciting theoretical things about Magnetic Monopoles. Paul Dirac, who combined special relativity with Quantum mechanics back in the 1930s, and predicted the existence of anti-matter before they were detected experimentally, showed that magnetic fields implies quantization.

I've grown up my whole life believing magnetic monopoles are just a theoretical fiction; now, I have to be quite excited about them!
