Actually, a Stellerator has already made the breakthroughs needed to make nuclear fusion a reality. We've had dangerous nuclear fission since the dawn of the nuclear age. There's cleaner and much safer fission designs built, but fusion would be a great accomplishment- clearly.
The place of nuclear power for humanity could be further complicated by nanotechnologies that can harness enough energy just by walking around, and solar cells by quantum dots and the list goes on. The one application I can think of is magnetic field shielding for space stations and habitats.
