Many of Trumps worst moment come when he’s speaking like this. I think the criticism is borderline petty because he appears to be trying to speak well of the first responders but he does himself no favors because he’s so unprepared.
Typically, these moments are very heavily scripted/practiced because it’s a day of national mourning. In his case, he is the actual subject of some of the anger so if there was ever an opportunity to go out an win some people over this was it but he fumbled it.
And, the supposed master of the news cycle later went on a twitter rant about his hosts and himself.
It has to be that he’s just too lazy or too arrogant to prepare or he just doesn’t care.
