Why are astronomers excited abou this? One reason is they used the entire four telescope optical interferometer to detect this gas stream. They just now were able to make the four telescope interferometer to work together, even though they built is a decade or two ago. The other reason I think is the Event Horizon Telescope will probably release their first image of Sag A black hole hoirzon in a month or two!
The Event Horizon Telescope has been slow and quiet about the data and the release of this first picture just in case the first image isn't quite that spectacular. Some suggest the really clear images won't happen till they extend this interferometer well out in space. I'm thinking the first picture will be spooky enough!
