Bucs should be giddy if Bortles is on the board.

+1000000I'd draft him without hesitation. But even if you don't like Bortles, chances are someone would want to trade up for him.

Why would you take the 3rd best OT prospect at pick 7? You could take a QB that is ranked as the #1 guy by many, the #1 CB, the #1 DT, the #1 OLB......but you take the #3 OT? This Erik Lambert guy is just awful. Everything he writes is horrible.

+1

I'm not saying yay or nay on Taylor Lewan but I can't agree with the mentality you are using to knock it down (I used to think that way but have changed). It's way too simplistic to say what you are saying. Take the 1988 draft. Tim Brown (6), Sterling Sharpe (7), Michael Irvin (11) and Anthony Miller (15) went in the first round. You'd really have rather had the first best RB (Gaston Green was the first taken)? Or how about taking the best CB (Terry McDaniel) before Irvin? It's not only relative to the strength of the position in that draft but also compared to other drafts. For example, Mayock called Lewin the 3rd best OT but also said he was better than Fisher or Joeckel - those guys went 1 and 2. Who wouldn't rather have had the third best QB in 2006 (Cutler - picked after Young and Leinardt)?

You had to go back to 1988 to find a good example. Just sayin.

Meh, it was probably just the first example that came to his mind.  Defensive ends in 2011 could work just as well.  The overall point's solid though, imo.  A player is or is not worth taking with a given draft pick.  The guys taken before him don't really impact that.  I hate the Lewan pick, but that's because I'm skeptical of him as a top 10 pick, not because of the existence of Robinson and Matthews.

If we had Lewan graded out as the BPA at #7 then fine, take him....I'm just saying I don't think that is the case in this situation.

I agree. Even worse, Lewan isn't in my top 5 OTs.He is so dreadful in pass protection that I think he projects as a guard or RT at best.

I didn't have to dig back for that one - it immediately came to mind. And I gave you another one from 2006. I spent about 3-4 minutes on it. The other obvious point is that it assumes that the teams ahead know who the "best" player in each group is. Would you care if we took the 3rd QB if it ended up being Johnny Manziel?

Exactly - point is, do the analysis, and pick the best player. We should just throw out player rankings because one position group is stronger than others? And for what it's worth, I'm not a big fan of Lewan.

I think there is a pretty big drop off from Robinson and Matthews to the no.3 OT in this draft. I have Kouandjio and Mewhort as 3 - 4. Both have LT potential but definitely not top 10 prospects IMO. I see what Booker is saying but I agree with JDub based on the talent in this draft.
