Bowers isn't a slam dunk to stick around given his last year of his deal is fairly high amount of money for a #4 DE. With that same money you can find a player that has been more productive, so the only reason you keep Bowers is because of his potential upside. If it was up to me I would watch how Bowers does his off season conditioning. If he falters I wouldn't bother even bringing him to camp. This is where Dominik screwed up as he could have signed Bennett cheaply and made out like a bandit for a bit if he was still productive just like McKay did when Rice returned to form.
The base minimum salary for a player in his fourth year is 730k. Bowers' base salary is 900k. The savings would be 170k, assuming a minimum salary player.
I'd rather have a guy like Mike Neal or CJ Wilson or Corey Wooten or any number of guys that might actually be worth $1.2M and might actually make our team better. You know....someone that hasn't already proven himself to be unworthy of a roster spot. Anyways...we have a new coach so we get to start our offseason workout program a month before the draft, so hopefully our staff will get a good look at Bowers than and decide whether he needs to be in our future plans.
Yeah the sad thing is a minimum salary player may be an upgrade over Bowers...that is sad lmao.Landri is a proven situational pass rusher but if the Bucs bring in Melton I don't see the Bucs keeping Landri given his salary.
Bowers hasn't proven himself unworthy of a roster spot. And if you pay a guy 1.2mm and cut Bowers, you're at 1.5mm.
Bowers hasn't proven himself unworthy of a roster spot.
Did you see him last season?Me neither.
Watch every team in the NFL. There will be lots of players at the back end of the roster that don't play much and don't make many plays. That doesn't mean they aren't worthy of a roster spot, it means there are better players ahead of him. There is no downside to keeping Bowers. He's cheap and might blossom under a proven defensive coach.

Says you.He has 34 tackles and 5 sacks in his 39 game career. This year he was handed the keys and couldn't beat out Daniel Teo'Neisam...who just happened to be THE worst starting DE in the entire league. This was suppose to be Bowers big year and he recorded 7 tackles ans a sack. I don't know what he needs to do to prove he is unworthy to you, but I have seen enough. He also went on IR again this year because he can not stay healthy.Waste of a roster spot.
Yeah, if he's not healthy, he's not going to make the team.Beyond health or trading him, it doesn't make sense to get rid of him. He's already spoken with Lovie Smith and Joe Cullen. I doubt they'd waste time reaching out to him if they didn't project him being part of the future.Cheap player with potential. There's no negative to keeping him.

You say he couldn't beat out DTN, yet he produced more than DTN in less snaps. Not beat him out or in the Schiano doghouse?
Considering all factors you keep him:1. Injuries - Has been injured every year2. Schiano - poor scheme and bad relationship 3. Low salary - around the vet min4. Potential - when healthy he flashed He'll be healthy, and have a much better coach and motivator. I predict we see allot if Bowers in 2014.
Bowers is a bum. Talk about the scheme and all of that, but when Schiano was talking him up all offseason to the media and how did he come in to camp? In no shape to play football. He had all season to work his way in to shape and get his spot back but what did we get out of him? Jack shlt. Gholston played in the scheme crappy ass scheme but he didn't have a problem producing.
Bowers knew the team was counting on him and that he would be the new starter. Instead of stepping up , he came in fat and out of shape and went through the motions.I'll never forgive him for that.

Literally everyone on the roster was more productive than DTN with less snaps. That isn't saying much.
