2014 NFL Draft: 3 Reasons Mike Evans Will Bust In Tampa Bay By Scott Whittum June 7, 2014 7:28 pm One of the most hyped prospects in the 2014 NFL Draft was Texas A&M Wide Receiver Mike Evans who skyrocketed up the draft boards of draft experts heading into Thursday night. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the seventh pick overall took Evans to go alongside of Vincent Jackson. This is an intriguing pick with great potential for first year head coach Lovie Smith but there are three reasons why this pick of Evans will end up as a huge bust for Tampa Bay.Who is going to get Evans the football at the Quarterback position? The passing game for the Buccaneers was a league-worst 32nd in 2013 as Tampa Bay threw for just 176.2 yards per game. Josh McCown was brought in from Chicago and should end up as the opening day starter unseating Mike Glennon. McCown did a nice job in keeping the Bears competitive while Jay Cutler was out due to injury. However, the question is going to remain is he the guy that can lead the Buccaneers deep into the playoffs and turn the Tampa Bay passing game into even an average one by getting Evans the ball consistently. The likely conservative offensive approach of Lovie Smith and Jeff Tedford.Smith in his time at Chicago was a defense first head coach and I would suspect he would be a similar defensive minded coach in Tampa. Tedford is a sharp offensive mind that should be able to get Evans the enough if he is given the freedom to do so. But, conventional wisdom gives the sense of the Buccaneers relying on the run game with Doug Martin and Vincent Jackson still being the primary number one receiver for Tampa and it might take longer than expected for Evans to make a truly dominant impact on the field. The lack of experience in a conventional offense for Evans.Evans despite all of his ridiculous physical skills has only played three seasons of football. The devil’s advocate would have concerns about the lack of overall experience Evans would have in a pro-style offense. The reality is Texas A&M’s no-huddle spread offense with Johnny Manziel at the helm is not the easiest offense to a get a true enough read on how Evans would do in a more structured offensive setting. Manziel was the ultimate freelancing schoolyard quarterback at Texas A&M and Evans had to rely a ton on his pure physical talent to make big time plays in his two seasons in College Station. It is going to be critical for Evans to hit the ground running right away learn the playbook and be very diligent in his route running if he wants to avoid being a bust.link
