So much in here to worrying. Most presses are pointless happy talk so the things you can thread out that are the truth seeping in the cracks matter.  I unfortunately see a lot of the "old" Lovie in here. The power run things scares me to no end but the comment about how defense and teams can win 10 games borders on insane. Seriously, HOU allowed 10 TOTAL more yards this year than SF did on defense and they are picking first. What could be the difference here, hmmmm. CLE was a top 10 defense. How'd that work out for them?  Meanwhile Donks 19, Colts 20, Chargers 23, Chiefs 24, Packers 25, Pats 26, Eagles 29 are all playoffs teams.  No, no, bad Lovie. QBs create the baseline and then defense, running and teams might add to that baseline but defense certainly doesn't create a baseline and teams won't ever consistently help your win totals.

Good article.       A little vague coach-speak from Lovie; after indicating Glennon was plenty good enough to win, he then says he wants athletes at EVERY position, and clearly liked the idea of a QB who can run. This will be an interesting off-season...  ;D

" We plan on having a balanced offensive attack. But at the same time, when I say balanced with the run, I mean being able to pass the ball and have a big-play ability in the passing game"...almost the exact same speech Schiano gave when he was hired...my main fear is that the offensive philosophy will not change...it will just be ran by different coaches...

I think we're reading to much into his words on this. Schiano said "big plays DOWN the field"  Lovie said "big-play ability in the passing game."  A big play can come off of a screen or quick slant.Tedford's offense wasn't known so much for going deep as it was for spread 'em out, quick reads and power running with the D spread out. He researched Tedford and obviously liked his approach.

I heard some interview with Lovie played earlier today in which I didn't get the feeling that he had a whole lot of knowledge of Glennon's game. "He'll be evaluated" type of comments. Didn't get the impression that he was all that invested in him. He may ultimately have to be but it wasn't in any way a ringing endorsement of the guy.

As I think you're saying, there's nothing inherently wrong with wanting to run the ball and take shots. Schiano's problem was he liked to run the ball with plays from the 1970s and take shots in obvious passing situations. If you're going to run you have to use more creative plays and formations and take shots by setting teams up with your earlier tendencies.

And to run a legit spread offense we need better weapons than we got on this roster. Really need some major upgrades...

Texans' offense gave up a defensive score in 7 games. That will put a dent in anyone's record. In points allowed, the top 4 teams are still alive: Seattle, Carolina, SF and New Orleans. Indy, NE and SD were 9, 10, 11. Denver is #22, but highest scoring team in league history. Keep teams out of the endzone and you'll win games.

x2 there's nothing wrong with the philosophy, Schianos staff just sucked at picking the plays and/or couldn't get his team to execute them

I think you can read into the we can win 8 games with defense, 2 with Special Teams and we need Offense to win the rest a few different ways. The way I am reading into it is that we know Lovie strength is the defense and we will build a strong defensive team.  When you look at the NFL these days, most games are won in the 4th quarter and decided by less than 7 points.  I think what he is trying to say is that we will build a defense that can get that crucial stop in the 4th quarter enough times to get us 8 wins and protect the lead that we have.  We will have a ST unit that can either make that clutch kick or dynamic return to get us 2 more.  That is 10 wins.  He needs to build an offense that can also get us that late 4th TD when we need it and in some cases more than that in the 4th quarter to become a playoff team and reach that 11-13 win total.    I don't think he is saying that defense alone will get us 8 wins and we will win all of those game 3-0.  We need to be able to win games in the 4th quarter and that is the formula he has.
