My way too early thoughts on what the Bucs should do this offseason… 8)Contract Actions (Re-work Revis, Jackson, Barth, Koenig and Nicks contracts to provide more cap space.)(Re-sign Lorig, Underwood, Byham, Meredith, Larsen, Casillas, Hayward, Watson, Gorrer)Free Agency DE Jared AllenDT Henry MeltonQB Josh McCownTE Dustin Keller Draft (No trades projected)…and no defenders in the draft?… (surprised myself)Round 1 (#7) - Sammy Watkins – WR (6010/205) - ClemsonFills Four Needs: Slot Receiver, Flanker/X wide out with Speed and an elite PR/KR. Arguably and by most early accounts - the BPA at this pick. It’s the sexy pick, but makes a lot of sense in Tedford’s quick strike offense and Lovie’s focus on ST and getting a premiere return man. (Would have went after a pass rusher here, but we have some talent to develop already (Gholston, Means) and I think Jared Allen is a target this FA.)Round 2 (#38) - Jimmy Garoppolo - QB (6020/222) – Eastern Illinois Prototypical developmental QB that will excel with professional coaching and having the ability to not to have to start right away makes too much sense. Quick set up, excellent accuracy and great timing. Moves around very well.Round 4 (#100) Gabe Jackson – OG (6030/340)- Mississippi StateBig, naturally strong man with surprising quick feet who needs work on his professional technique. He will be a key cog as a pulling guard in the power run game. (Could go earlier just based on athleticism.)Round 5 (#131) Arthur Lynch - TE (6050/260) - Georgia Strong, excellent blocking TE with above average hands. Will support Lovie’s power run focused offense.Round 7 (#199) Austin Wentworth – OT (6050/306) Fresno State Small School LOT, entire Oline only allowed a total 11 sacks in 12 games. Aggressive and has an inside track with Tedford. A developmental swing-tackle.UDFA focus on CB's, WR's and OL
why the hell would we pay top dollar for Melton? How much money do you want to have tied up in DT when Spence was perfectly fine at NT last year?
Joseph & Penn still here... for $13M? Dotson, Joseph, Zuttah, a 4th round pick & Penn... just one of the worst Oline in the league!Melton? you have $13M on McCoy and you take a very expensive backup?don't like Garoppolo/McCown & Keller/Lynch...
I'd like to get some CB depth in here and show Leonard Johnson the door. Gorrer showed promise, but he also spent 3/4 the year on the shelf. Revis and Banks are a good starting tandem, but I'm really not too excited about anything at all behind them. Also not too interested in Melton. I think bringing in Jared Allen is good as a stop gap. I think a change in scheme will do this DL wonders.I'd also like to see the OL addressed more in FA. Nicks is possibly done, Joseph underacheived. I think Dotson could be a very good LT. There was a report that the previous regime was going to blow up the OL. I don't think that should be any different now just becuase of the coaching change. Keep Zuttah, Dotson, Meredith and Carimi - All other starters and backups should be changed out IMO. Handling a lot of the OL issues in FA with proven vet talent allows us to address other needs in the draft and won't require as much time to get up to speed as a rookie.
Melton might tie up too much money in one position. But losing McCoy would cripple us. Keller might not be healthy.Trade nicks, penn and joseph. Package that for a 3rd or hopefully a 2nd. Use it on a OG or CB.Trade vjax for djax. Trade dougie for a 2nd.Sign Jared Allen and Alex Mack as FA prizes. Sign an adequate CB.Draft jake Matthews, sefarian, and Jordan Matthews. Trade a 7 for jonathon martin.
A couple of things...first off I do not like the idea of adding players coming off major injury such as Melton/Keller this team has already taken some many gambles in the past with players that are on the mend.No chance the team reworks Jackson deal as they just reworked it a year ago. Revis if his deal is reworked is going to want more money up front and guaranteed money up front. Resigning all the linebackers is a waste when there are so many options in the late rounds or as free agents that could provide the same production for a fraction of the cost. As for free agents and the draft...here is what I would like to see done...Free AgentsC Alex MackG Jon AsamoahDT Linval JosephLB James AndersonCB Walter ThurmondWR/KR Jacoby FordDraftTrade down from 7th to around late first with the 49ers picking up their first rounder and both of their second rounders1. Cedric Ogbuehi, OL Texas A&M 2. Jace Amaro, TE Texas Tech 2. Shayne Skov, LB Stanford 2. Davante Adams, WR Fresno State 4. Jimmy Garoppolo, QB Eastern Illinois 5. Aaron Lynch, DE South Florida 7. Bennett Jackson, CB Notre Dame 7. Caraun Reid, DT Princeton .
Allen is significantly overrated on this board. He would have been a great pickup form the Chiefs but his play really fell off this year and he's clearly in decline
Calm down ladies... it's a swag. lol...Didn't name starters... although some are obvious. ;)As Lovie said - EVERYTHING on defense starts at the 3 technique... imagine this Dline Clayborn, McCoy, Melton, Allen.A deep roster... imagine that?Offense (26)QB – Glennon, McCown, GarappoloRB – Martin, James, RaineyFB – LorigWR – Jackson, Williams, Watkins, Underwood, Owusu, PageTE – Wright, Keller, Lynch, ByhamOT – Penn, Dotson, Wentworth, MeredithOG – Nicks, Joseph, Larsen, JacksonOC – ZuttahDefense (24)DE – Clayborn, Allen, Gholston, Bowers, MeansDT – McCoy, Melton, Spence, GibsonLB – Watson, David, Foster, Hayward, Casillas, CB – Revis, Banks, Johnson, Carr, Gorrer, AdamsS – Goldson, Barron, Tandy, McCray Specialists (3) LS – EconomosP – KoenigK – BarthPractice Squad… (8)CB Marc AnthonyOG Jace DanielsWR Tommy StreeterOT Emmett ClearyCB Bobby FelderDT Everett HawkinsDE Marvin BookerCB Rashaan Melvin

you started off on the right track then your post got derailed y some awful suggestions. i like the idea of re-working some contracts and re-signing some of our own but plz tell me you're talking about Spencer Larsen and NOT Ted cuz he has to be the worst backup in NFL history, wouldn't crack a college lineup thats how bad/ atrocious he is. i would go as far as paying a team to sign him and not have him in any way shape or form relate to Tampa. he sucks!!
and just one more thought...I don't think the team is going to be as 'blown up' as quickly as many here think/wish. I think 2014 will be a transition year...Penn, Bowers, Nicks, Joseph and Glennon have the most to prove - all to varying degrees.JMHO
Adding Jared Allen and Sammy Watkins to this roster would make HUGE overnight improvements. Yes to both please
Melton - Rotates with both Spence and McCoy - no loss in pass rush, ever. (think about the center of the Lions Dline) Assuming he's 100'% healthy but may also give us a break on his contract?Allen - I think he's still got it... just needs a fresh start with someone like Lovie and he reportedly thinks the world of Frazier. He helps Gholston develop into that Rice-type-of-guy.Oline - definitely a big issue (hence the focus on with 2 draft picks and 2 PS spots) Those guys stick through the transition assuming 100% healthy. Possibly rework contracts?QB - Gives Glennon a shot, has a competent Vet backup and also gives us a shot at a complete QB to develop.TE - Forgot that Keller was busted up. Only signed if healthy. Lynch will surprise some people.VJax - Keep his contract the same unless willing to make it more team / cap friendly.Ted Larsen - viable as only a backup at G and C... He's cheap and marginally effective (for now.)
You want to give Nicks new money? Time to let it go. And Garappollo floats the ball.
Just a thought Some tackles when they have lost a step as they get older ( Penn )have been moved to guard. What do you think? Thanks
Not bad overall but I don't see why you'd re-do Revis' contract to free up cap room? You free up cap room by issuing signing bonus money and thus pushing up front money into future years. Right now the Bucs have plenty of cap room so they're better off paying him for right now and not jeopardizing cap room in the future when other players are going to need raises.
