That is a nice theory but every play you flip them to the NT means one of the two of them is basically worthless. So you are willingly neutralizing one of your best players for the other team every play. Thanks defense!. There is no confusion, the alignment tells you who is the NT and who is the UT and teams adjust blocking because we could come out aligned to either side.
why is the nt worthless and neutralized? Because he sees a double? And if teams can adjust blocking, why wouldn't they just double mccoy every snap?
The defensive coordinator decides who is going to get doubled by how everyone lines up. When you put the UT between the LG and LT, it's virtually impossible for the C to get there in time to help out the LG.
It isn't rocket science FRG , yet some just can't grasp this alignment thing.
I don't know how we played this system for so many years and people haven't figured it out. Here is another point, cost. At some point,m you have to plan your budget. You have to be cheap somewhere on the field. No one can afford a team of all pros everywhere. We did that very well for a long time by being cheap at NT, SLB and FS. Those were the low rent roll another body in spots on defense. Not saying those have to be those spots but drafting Donald means you are planning to spend high dollars over the long term at the NT spot. That means you need to pick another place we can't or won't went money. Personally, that NT gig is a great place to go cheap because the requirements to succeed at that spot are low.
Show me the reputable scouting report that projects Donald as an effective multiple position player at the next level. He's seen as the opposite actually.
Game tape do it? Here is his playing both DT positions and DE in a 3 man front - http://draftbreakdown.com/video/aaron-donald-vs-virginia-2013/

That's fine he did in college. I think everyone knows he was all over the place at PITT the questions isn't what did he do but what can he do. That is the problem at the next level that I don't see him being anything other than a UT -- and frankly to me it is a waste of his immense talent not to use him at that spot. Can he line up at DE...sure. GMC did last year. It is a total waste of talent, yes it is. The issue at NT is that job doesn't require talent, it requires effort. The defensive design wipes that guy out. I don't ever want to willingly minimize my best player by design -- see why Rutgers got fired for example. To use a clumsy metaphor, NT is a job that requires you to drive nails into a board. A cheap hammer can do that, so can a finely crafted bronze statue. One is a good use of the tool..the other isn't because nails get driven into the board with both but the bronze doesn't make anything better.
Everyone doesn't know he was all over the place at Pitt evidently - As for lining up at various positions I would look at it as a strength for both depth and matchup advantages. I understand what you're saying Dal - I just see more in the opportunity. I don't have access to the 'reliable scouting reports' that some might like me to provide to certify Donald will move from position to position - unsurprisingly... JMVHO

Donald is tough for me because I really, really love the player and think he is an elite talent in the draft and deserves to be talked about wi the Mack's and Clowney types. The problem is that I don't see the fit in the system and the overall bang for the buck. I am trying hard to keep my overall value view from conflicting wi the evaluation of the individual.

If we drafted Donald the NT spot would be cheap. He'd cost less than we are paying Clinton McDonald. And then in 5 years we can decide who is worth resigning as our starting UT....a 31 year old McCoy or a 27 year old Donald. They wouldn't both get resigned in 2019 so we would never be spending big money on a NT.

So a 285lb guy that had nearly identical explosion numbers as Barr and Mack at the combine and actually played quite a bit of DE in college, even got 11 sacks in 2011 as a DE... is the same as McCoy rushing from DE? Come on man. You aren't even making good arguments.
The guy is a player...IMO he'll be able to make plays anywhere on the line...Teams that win with defense these days have depth on the line and utilise it with frequent d-line rotation. He's the best 4-3 D-lineman in the draft and the ideal insurance policy for the "piston" of this defense...Draft this man!

Dal is conflicted - not being the norm horse's azz found so frequently on the Red.

i just dont see how facing a double makes a quality player worthless. many average DTs get 5 sacks a year, so could a great player at the position produce more? i also dont believe that donald can only play the 3 tech. i do believe that the UT is the most important position on our defense, and i believe that mccoy has been injured a lot and even when he isnt injured he is nicked up a lot and appears to tire later in games. i also dont think donald will break the bank until his seoond contract, when as jdoub pointed out mccoy will be 31.
I think a lot depends on what our other options are - who are the best players on our board at 7, can we trade back, etc.? I understand the concerns that dalbuc expresses - but I've become to agree more and more with the Ron Wolf adage about never regretting taking great players. He's not my first choice at 7, but the first choice might not be there, and I like him plenty.
The biggest question is do the Bucs invest a resource such as the #7 pick or even a first round pick if they move back on a DT despite the fact that Donald is a terrific player. This has not been Lovie's MO in the past. I can see a 2nd or 3rd rounder perhaps but I'm not sure he'll pull the trigger on this one with a fair amount of other needs in particular.
...also depends on if they see him as being more than just a DT.
