Folks are bitching about the first down play calls being so run-heavy. We aren't privy to gameplanning meetings, so I'm going to check to see if the NYJ have a tendency to play 2 deep Safeties on first down in the course of this game (or 7ish in the box). If they are, that is a good reason to be run-heavy on first down. Another reason to be run-heavy is to protect your team from your TO-factory of a 2nd string QB. But we'll see what NYJ came out with on 1st down and if we were set up to lose or set up to win. We did have 3 PAs on 1st down through the 1st drive coming out of the 3rd quarter, so I'll be interested in seeing how those particular plays manifested on the field.
Sweezy is struggling. He was playing slightly below average before the last few games and the last few games he has been really, really poor. As such, I'm going to put him under the microscope this week and see what it looks like. The thing at OG in the running game is, if you're not a 6'5", 330 lb behemoth/earth-mover and you're getting stalemates, you're probably (effectively) losing. Those behemoth's stalemates are (effectively) wins due to their size/girth. Not so much for a sub-300 lb OG. He's generating a ton of stalemates (tantamount to losses due to size) and about a fair amount of losses in the run game. And he just plays too high in his pass sets so his leverage is often way too poor. We'll see how it looks this week (my guess is not very good).
In the final analysis, I'm thinking it would likely be best to turn him loose this offseason and kick DSmith inside to this position. That would allow him to be play-side on most Zone plays and Power plays so he wouldn't have to try to get 2nd level on LBs (with difficult angles) and he wouldn't have to pull; neither of which are his strengths. Pass blocking he would be moving in a very similar (but considerably less dynamic and demanding) than he is now (due to 4-3 Under and 3-4 alignments), so he wouldn't be swimming in unfamiliar waters. That would mean we have to (and I think we all agree that we do) draft his replacement this year.
Anything else folks are looking for a zoomed-in look at from this week's game?
