I'm not going to speculate on any pathologies developed in this game; eg "Jameis becoming gun-shy and pass-rush hyper-aware due to x, y, z."
I'm just going to look at each play and break down why this particular play was won or lost. You guys can speculate from there.
1ST DRIVE AFTER SACK/FUMBLE/RECOVERY GAVE US GREAT FIELD POSITION TO GO UP BY 3 SCORES.
1ST & 10 AT NO 27 |14:14
(14:14) P.Barber up the middle to NO 22 for 5 yards (D.Davis, S.Rankins).
12, Power I Strong Power O Lead vs 43 Under w/ Rolled up SS.
Everyone does their job here except Marpet who is the puller. He loses to the MLB who is filling play-side B, but gets away with a Hold. Solid balance through trash contact nets Barber 5 yards.
2ND & 5 AT NO 22 |13:40
(13:40) (Shotgun) P.Barber up the middle to NO 22 for no gain (A.Okafor).
11, Shotgun Singleback Right/Twins both sides, Draw vs 42 Nicke. This play is actually blocked well by everyone. Barber makes a bad read and cuts back from play-side B to opposite B and gives angles of pursuit and the ability of blockers to shed to that side. He should have just cut into play-side B (Benenoch had his man walled off) and he would have picked up positive yards.
3RD & 5 AT NO 22 |12:57
(12:57) (Shotgun) J.Winston pass incomplete short right to C.Godwin (C.Jordan).
Shotgun Singleback Left, Hump motion from Tight Trips Right to Wide Left to Tight Twins vs 24 Nickel w/ a pair of 4i techs, OLBs pressing edges, ILBs pressing A gaps, Press on Mike boundary right and Tight/Off elsewhere, Single High Safety; C3Z.
We're running a Hitch (Wide)/Flat (Slot) combo on the right with Evans and Godwin. They 2 DBs both get pushed hard vertically by Mike and the Flat defender is trying to get out to Godwin while being screened by both Mike's route an the boundary CB. Godwin was wide open immediately and Jameis is going there immediately.
The problem is, Dotson loses the edge instantly. He also gets away with a hold. This should have been a trivial pitch and catch (and run) to Godwin, but Dotson's loss causes Jameis' arm to get hit (I mentioned this in another thread) and the ball flutters to the ground.
Incompletion on what should have easily have been an extended drive.
You guys know what happens on 4th down; doink off the right upright.
We're 1 for 6 in 40 yard FGs this year but fantastic from all other ranges...makes sense.
