Man Trap (backside DE) Cutback run. Kwon is very late reading and reacting here and doesn't fit the run here at all. This is actually fortuitous however, because the backside DE doesn't end up reading the play and gets taken out by the Trapping FB. This is his play to contain. So now Kwon is in space (making up for the DE) 1v1 w/ the Tailback. He whiffs badly.
Not good.

PA pass against Quarters. Kwon comes up on the play-fake and then gets an extremely minimal drop afterward (basically ending in his beginning position). It doesn't cost us here, but this isn't even close to an appropriate drop for his responsibility here (he needs to be able to affect a 10/12 yard Dig). There are no eligibles in front of him and 10 yards is the line to gain. He has to get better depth here.
This has been a problem and continued to be here.

A little Power Trap out of Shotgun. LG pulls to Trap McCoy and McCoy's RG goes 2nd level to Kwon. Kwon is very late reading this (that is his gap) and getting downhill to evade that 2nd level RG and fill his gap. He gets taken out by the RG. LVD covers up and makes the play.

Great job reading and reacting on this Zone Read play by both Kwon and LVD. Both are in their gaps immediately.
The story of this game's poor run defense was nearly exclusively due to our DE play overpursuing down the LoS and losing their gap for cutback or losing contain on a Zone Read keep. The overwhelming majority of those poor plays were on Will Clarke, as this one was.
God we need to upgrade our DE play next year.

Another Outside Zone Run. Kwon is a little late reading/reacting and getting downhill which allows the backside G to get on top of him. However, he does a great job of cutting the angle of the G at the last second and shedding him to fit his gap well enough, but he is a non-factor as DL wins this.

Power O Lead. This was a mess. I have no idea how neither Conte nor Kwon made this play in the backfield.
Kwon - This is his gap and his play. Neither the pulling OG nor the Leading FB come to him. He is clean as a whistle to come downhill and make a TFL. For some unknown reason, what is happening doesn't register to him...he takes this weird hop-step laterally as he processes (rather than getting downhill into his gap and beyond LoS for the tackle). This actually allows Jordy Nelson to actually come down on him and block him.
I don't understand.
Conte - Clearly they're in Man coverage as Conte is stacked with the LBs and chases the TE who is blocking down right next to the designed hole. For whatever weird reason, he misreads the play and chases the down-blocking TE rather than getting downhill and making the tackle?
I don't understand.
I'm sorry, but this is just horrendous play by two defenders. This is not coaching. You fire Mike Smith and bring someone else in won't impact this particular play. This is incomprehensibly bad. This should have been a trivial TFL for either player and its a 9 yard gain?
