2023-2024 NFL Season
Sharing for some who may also find interesting:
QB:
- Tom Brady with his $35M dead cap hit is the 3rd highest paid QB this season only behind Mahomes and Tannenhill with their “Cap Numbers” not Cash spent then he would be 6th.
WR:
- Mike Evans’ cap charge of $23,698,500 is 5th most of all active NFL WR’s this season…
- Chris Godwin’s is 29th.
OLB/EDGE
- Shaquil Barrett is the 3rd highest paid OLB/EDGE at $21,252,941 with only TJ Watt and Myles Garret making more.
LINEBACKER
- Devin White is the 8th highest paid LB at $11,706,000. Shaq Thompson and CJ Mosley are the two highest paid making $24.5M and $21.5M respectively this year.
KICKER
- Ryan Succop is the 8th highest paid Kicker with only $500K separating him from being in top 5.
GREAT VALUE
- Ryan Jensen
- Vita Vea
- Carlton Davis
- Jamal Dean
- Antoine Winfield (Massive pay day coming) making $3,711,578 this year with the top 8 safeties making $17-19M a season.
- Tristian Wirfs (Massive pay day coming) making $5,163,464 this season and as a RT that puts him at 17th. Top 3 RT’s make $19-24M a season. Top 3 LT’s make $27-35M a season.
Wirfs and Winfield have already outperformed their contracts. This is Wirf’s 4th season at just 24 years old and that means we can exercise his 5th year option for next year. If he’s paid within the top RT’s or LT’s we’re looking at least $20M increase a season.
This is also Winfields 4th season and the last on his deal with no option available. Just 25 years old. If he’s paid within the top Safties we’re looking at least $15M increase a season.
Devin White is the name we’ve been dreading. Playing on his 5th year option Todd Bowles is going to have to figure this out with Jason Licht. The biggest contract just signed by Raquan Smith of the Ravens is Total Value $100M and AVG./Year of $20M. The next top 3 are between $85M and $98M making $17-19.5M a year. So that’ll be at least another $8-9M increase if we resign White.
2024
- Team Cap Space: $64,473,836
However, those 3 free agents alone account for $45M. So we’d have $19M left over.
Mike Evans will also be a free agent after next year so two more seasons of Mike!

shoot you’re right, 2024 is a void year of $12,198,000
don't understand people who think White should be in play for a big contract!
looking at the current market, he's probably not worth the number of his 5th-year option but it's gtd...
i don't take PFF grades for granted but he's one of the worst graded LB every year for a reason. 🧐
As tragic as TB12’s cap impact is on this team, I look at Akiem Hicks’ contract making $5M in dead money this year… with the fact he was paid $1,127,272. a game for the ‘11 games’ he ‘played in’.
Meanwhile, Suh played for the Eagles for $2M…
Suh being 36 and Hicks being 34 offered no real difference other than Suh actually earned his paycheck.
Suh played from weeks 11-18, and had 176 snaps. Hicks played in 398 snaps in 3 more games played with a far worse D-line
I love this attitude of players dead cap... as if they didn't do it initially to help management get under the cap.
Evans has always given us a discount and always restructured to help his team.

Interesting perspective- However, is it correct to say the player who occupies the dead cap “did it to help management get under the cap”?
My understanding is, management identifies who they’re willing to risk giving cash now whether in a restructure or extension, but this normally is not a sacrifice to the player who will then (circumstance depending) count as ‘dead cap’?
In fact, it’s essentially a reward to the player. Management, by approaching them with this “ask” is normally giving them the money NOW and the ‘dead cap’ is spread out over years. Because my understanding how the Cap works is there is what the books have as what a player ‘counts against the cap’ for that year, but the cash actually given that year can be less or more than that ‘cap charge’ against the ‘books’ the formal total cap.
@armybuc91 - I completely agree. I said last year that this was going to be a big mistake. Bucs thought was Hicks and Hall could replace Suh, but that was a complete failure. Hicks is fine when he’s healthy, but he’s out too often. Suh doesn’t miss games.
And then they wanted to get JTS on the field so bad that they didn’t re-sign JPP. Building your youth is important, but you better be right with who has the potential to truly develop. JTS has not and will not ever be more than occasional pass rush depth. Another bad decision.
I'd imagine it's both but it starts with management asking for it to start

Cam Gill was ready to have a breakout year. He gets dismissed because he was undrafted from a small school but he has + traits and made plays in limited action. Losing him for the year hurt more than people realize.
Nelson, O'Connor and Gill are back in the fold. That tells me that the team likes these players having bigger roles moving forward. Still would like to see DL, ILB, OLB and S be all drafted.

Nelson won't necessarily have a bigger role. He had a major role this year due to Shaq's injury. Gill and O'Connor are still back end of the roster. If they find DL and OLB in the draft, Gill and O'Connor are on thin ice. Their signings mostly have to do with familiarity and low price.

Drafted rookies beyond the 3rd round tend to have a hard time beating out established vets. Gill and O'Connor are third stringers but they are not fringe players in that they have been in TB defensive system for a while now and they have seen a lot of playing experience in real competitive NFL games.
So if I had to make a crystal ball guess O'Connor and Gill are important special teams players for one and two they are depth with experience. O'Connor also has position flexibility as well. Now, if the Bucs use a first or 2nd round pick on an edge rusher maybe that pushes Gill off the roster. But given Shaq's injury I think by default Gill may stick if he too recovers.
