Thru a combination of past years comments by Bucs coaches/front office; observations of Trask; and the importance of 2023 for Bowles I see our QB situation like this:
Trask is being hyped to keep other teams from thinking we’ll draft a QB early. Even Arians confirmed that last year he was praising Trask’s abilities while Brady was “retired” because he had to. The team had to because they had no other options at that time. Just like where we are right now with only Trask on the roster.
There has never been talk out of OBP from coaches or players saying how Trask is really running the scout team well or surprising guys with his development. We hear it about guys on other teams, but never a peep about Trask shining in a practice.
The thought that he hasn’t been given an opportunity yet makes no sense. No one deserves the shot. And him being a 2nd round pick doesn’t make a difference if he isn’t showing that he was worth that pick in practice.
This year we must either find a veteran free agent or a rookie that has the potential to be our franchise QB in the near future. Bowles, nor Light will let Trask be the one that finishes their career with the Bucs. That’s career suicide. He doesn’t appear to have the arm strength or decision making to be able to succeed in the NFL. He had a really good year at UF but his talent level was out of this world and he had wide open receivers and contested catches all over the field.
I really like Hendon Hooker from Tennessee. He is being talked about more and more throughout the NFL. I’d take him in the 2nd round if he is available. He gives us hope and potential, which we don’t have right now.
he had wide open receivers and contested catches all over the field.
Huh? That seems a tad contradictory.
@biggs3535 - at times there were wide open receivers and at other times talented receivers making contested catches. Meaning he had amazing talent around him making big plays. Look at the offensive group. Studs.

I hear they have pretty good WR talent in the NFL, and specifically in Tampa with Evans and Godwin. Giving your guy a shot to make a play isn't a bad thing.
Not to mention, you can use that description for most college QB's, including this year's crop. Stroud and Young threw to WR open receivers all of the time. They also threw the ball into tight coverage and their guys made plays for them.
@biggs3535 - agreed. We see that with Ohio State QBs all the time. It’s just another observation that I see with Trask.
Trask will get an opportunity to battle for the starting spot, but I don’t see the Bucs pushing all their chips in on only Trask this year. If he can beat out a vet and possibly a rookie, then good for him. In my opinion, I don’t see that happening and I get the feeling the Bucs don’t either.
Trask, vet, rookie.
Problem is I don't see how can afford a vet QB like Baker or Heinicke
We will have another vet QB on this team.
Trask and Mayfield or Lock
I love hooker myself but coming off that ACL injury no way goes in the 2nd.
3rd possibly even 4th.
Hooker will be 26 , pass
play Trask , if he stinks the 2024 draft will have a handful of very good QBs
@debucsown - I thought that as well, but I get the feeling someone is going to pull the trigger in the 2nd round because so many teams are hoping he’ll be there in the 3rd.
@pennywise - as coaches they can’t just play him and hope for the best. Their job is to figure out if he’s going to be a player sooner than later. And there may be a few on the staff that already know that answer. We’ll see. Just too much money involved these days to let a guy play and hope he surprises. If I had to put money on it I’d say he doesn’t start more than 2 games this year. And those 2 games would be due to injuries to others.
They will know , a year playing with the starters , will help in that decision.
this team won’t compete for anything this year , and they know it . They are paying the piper this year . I expect a bad year .
