Wondering whether Wirfs and Gregory decided to attend.
Gregory is on the DNR list
$1.365 Mil of Gregory's $3 mil is "guaranteed", but I have to believe if he doesn't even show up on Day 1 the Bucs don't owe him a penny.
IMO the problem is that Gregory signed with the idea that he was going to be the next Shaq Barrett, but in reality he was just a pre-draft insurance policy in case things didn't fall the Bucs way in the draft. Well things did fall the Bucs way in the draft and they drafted Braswell who will probably start Week 1. This leaves Gregory as a little used and unhappy backup skulking around on the sidelines. He doesn't want that, nor do the Bucs frankly.
So to be fair to Gregory, the Bucs should just cut him loose, but that will cost them the $1.365 mil which they would have to pay. But if they don't cut him and go through required procedures of fines and so forth they risk the worst happening - Gregory actually shows up! He's not needed, he doesn't want to spend the time to learn the system, and he probably has a bad attitude. The best thing is to just cut him loose and take the hit. You paid for the insurance, and the best thing that can happen with insurance is you don't end up needing to use it.
$1.365 Mil of Gregory's $3 mil is "guaranteed"
He already has $100k plus in fines owed to the Bucs from skipping mandatory minicamp
He is suing the NFL over $500K plus in fines
He's accumulating mandatory fines of $50K per day starting today for the DNR
I take it Wirfs did show up? I guess they would have reported it if he didn't.
wirfs was in the crowd for the Bowles speech.
I am intrigued to see what the the Bucs FO choose to do with RG roster spot when he is eventually moved off the roster.
It's a good question. I think there is only one reason he's not already cut, and that's the contract. I'm guessing the NFL rules say that if you cut someone you have to pay them their guaranteed money regardless if they report. If they cut him they'll have to pay him $1.3 mil which is guaranteed to him which will count against the cap. Or they can go through the process dictated by the NFL whatever that is.I am intrigued to see what the the Bucs FO choose to do with RG roster spot when he is eventually moved off the roster.
They could just eat the money and pay him to get rid of him, which would let the team move on, but then you are giving a million bucks to a guy who didn't even show up one day for his job.
So if I'm Licht I don't let it slide with Gregory and give him free money. And that's the reason I don't think they officially cut him just yet.
As for who will replace him on the roster, they need a QB4 just in case they get an offer for Trask or one of the QBs pulls a muscle. They need somebody to come in be the next Ryan Griffin and learn the system. Or they could bring back Deven Thompkins. Even if he isn't really going to make the team, it would be the fair thing to do since he was cut because of the false accusations.
