Falcons acquire Matthew Judon in trade with Patriots: Source The Atlantic.
its behind a paywall, here’s the lead in:
“The Atlanta Falcons bolstered their pass rush Wednesday with a trade for New England Patriots edge rusher Matthew Judon, a team source confirmed. The Falcons will send a third-round pick to New England in exchange for Judon, according to ESPN.“
if the plan was to wait to see our edge compliment perform in another couple of Preseason games before trying to improve the edge this season… the pickings just got slimmer (especially for those “non Hassan Reddick” types).
The Falcons just got a little bit harder to defeat.
Yep.
And for some reason Kancey was watching practice today…according to JBF, Bowles was tight lipped about when asked…

so many things have to break the team’s way. Apparently one of our TEs was injured today
Tough sport!
A 3rd round pick for a 1-year rental, 32-year old player coming off a torn bicep.
Kudos to Licht for showing zero interest.
He's turning 32 and played in four games last year (injured in the 4th quarter of game 4). He's older than Shaq Barrett. He did get four sacks in those four games. The fact that the Falcons gave up a 3rd round pick shows a bit of desperation on Atlanta's part. That's a terrible deal even if they have some contract extension worked out. That wouldl be an even worse idea. He'll be 33 by that time.
between cousins and Judon two aging players coming off major injuries.
Kirk already got his $. Dudes made more in his career then Tom freaking Brady.
will atl pay Judon as well?
low risk high reward move for them.
do we address our psss rush? I hope so.
reddick my top choice. Could make it work but will be tough. Cap wise this year it’d be tight.
Next years cap we are about 5 mil over right now. A few restructures(vea 22 mil cap hit. Dean 15 mil) will help that.
Considering the players the Bucs have drafted in the 3rd round (Godwin, Dean, Lynch, and Barber to name a few), I'm glad the Bucs didn't bite.

Look at this year, albeit, we don’t know much.
But, that would’ve been either Tykee or Jalen.

Their deals already have void years on them.
Why would we want to pile on ever more dead money?
Bucs most recent 3rd round picks: Jalen McMillan, Ya Ya Diaby, Rachaad White. When you deal away a 3rd round pick I'd hardly call that low risk. Licht would never give up that much.

As for the Falcons, Perhaps they are trying to make up for the fact that they could have drafted Dallas Turner who is impressing in this preseason instead of Penix. But the Falcons have sent the message they're going all out to win the division, so the Bucs need to take note and not be afraid to add another piece or two if they can.
Also added Jeffery Simmons.
@trask force fair point.
to play devils advocate shall I list the first and second round picks we have blown?
the draft is such a crap shoot.
Atlanta without question is a lot better with Judon and Simmons. They are going to rely a lot more on that defense than anyone wants to admit until their offense is in sych.
Atlanta seems to be selling out for 2024, which makes the Penix pick all the more befuddling. To keep pace the Bucs can't stand pat... but they probably will. They already traded a 6th round pick from 2025. You'll have to pry any more picks out his cold dead hands.Atlanta without question is a lot better with Judon and Simmons. The only trade bait the Bucs realistically have is one Kyle Trask. He's the insurance policy in case Mayfield gets injured, but if any more starters go down around the league then Trask may have some value that could entice Licht. The Vikings are paying Darnold $10 mil, so they'll probably stick with him, but if another team without a credible backup loses it's starter then they could come calling for Trask with a draft pick or even another player. I'm not predicting it, just saying it's a possibility.
Bucs have cap space to improve their roster if they want but you have to find the right player at the right position. Falcons strategy is a dual strategy of building for the future but also trying to win now. Very bold but those two goals could hinder one another. Cousins contract could hinder the Falcons future down the line and like wise Penix is not being used to take advantage of a cheap rookie deal.
Outside of Pitts and London they have a lot of slot guys on offense. Which fits into what Robinson will be doing on offense with motion. But the lack of big body catchers with Cousins/Penix is a huge down side. Penix is used to playing with larger WRs in college and similar sentiment with Cousins.
Judon makes Carter better in that Carter can win 1 on 1s though now. Jarrett with Onyemata with Ruke on the inside will be tough. But the Falcons secondary is the best in the NFC South now arguably.
So what I am saying is that I don't buy the hype of the Falcons offense but I see the real potential with their defense though.
