Have we lost our God damn minds.
This is a huge mistake.
Huge.
I'm dumbfounded.
It better be a short contract.
Huh?

the original article.
could be right, but he's basically saying a lot of people think hes going to get paid more tha we all think and recent events make that even more likely
Well, perhaps you should read the article you are referencing. The author of the article came up the figure of $40 mil out of his own head probably because who's going to read a blurb that Baker will make $33 mil?
Yes, Baker is going to get paid, probably by the Bucs. No other team is going to want to make a Derek Carr mistake and pay too much. But for the Bucs he's worth it for the continuity.
The real figure to look at is the guaranteed money of course, and the amount of guaranteed years. They can't get locked into a long-term deal they can't get out of. I say two years mostly guaranteed, and whatever comes after that they have to be able to get out of it.
$40m too much for a QB of his caliber. Maybe $30m/yr with some incentives, two years max, $40m guaranteed.
His overall stats for the season are good, but he had too many below average games. Plus the team finished at .529, .526 including the playoff games. He still has much to prove, and if he lifts this team to more regular season wins, and some playoff wins, he'll have earned bigger money.
Obviously the Glazers must be mIndful of the amount of paper they hand out to any single player, even KC cannot ignore the Team for the sake of One player, even if its P'ma. But hearing the words out of his mouth, HE KNOWS he deserves to get PAID, and he does. 2 years to prove it, Im sure he'd entertain FIRST a SERIOUS offer from the Bucs, he's kinda found a home here I hopium, a stable and consistent and even, nurturing homey!'um. Yeah I hope his payday makes him smile and I hopium that Baller honors that symbolic gesture for what it is,....its symbolic for everyone elses sake, the family, the fans, the mentors who want to see that, despite predefined paradigm of Bust or Journeyman, the appropriate amount of compensation (ie paper) is provided for services rendered. Thats a shorthand definition of Justice: appropriate KARMA compensation for services rendered (either good or bad). The tru compensation for competitors, real ones....isnt the money (DAK PRESCOTT VS TB, or even BALLER has more playoff wins yet is 100x more humbled), its the FIRE you see in the eyes of those looking at U while YOU hold the trophy, that moment of JOY, is all the compensation a person needs aside from the basic necessities of life such as shelter, food, safety, the stuff we learned about in elementary. I think Baller is that kinda guy, not even winning the Precision Challenge Fires him up...those are only consolation/participation trophies (I return those to sender BTW), I think He wasnt it ALL. Just mI 2c TY.

I did lol
and summarized it accurately too

From the article:
" Last month, eyebrows were raised when I mentioned that Baker Mayfield, a candidate for the league’s Comeback Player of the Year Award, was on pace for a contract that would pay him at least $40 million annually. And while many disagreed, the general consensus at the Senior Bowl was that Mayfield is going to get paid a lot more than most expect. Several factors play into this belief, but two stand out after I spoke to several people."
he goes on to mention the "recent events" like Morris hiring
The article is Tony P trying to defend his earlier prediction of $40 million, not linked to any credible source. Just tea leaves
I could see 3 years, $75 million, with $40 mil guaranteed. Anything more than that and we should check the mental health of Licht...

I can see 3 years at $90M max (with an APY of $30M).
This would put him roughly “middle of the pack” which is what he is.
If they sign him to more than that, we’ll be stuck in purgatory and Licht should be shown the door.
Yeah I don't have a problem with the "More than people think" part, but lets be real who else besides the Bucs want to have a Derek Carr type situation where you pay big money and find yourself saddled with a middle of the road QB who's not elevating your team? Baker is a good leader and a decent QB, but he's not going to be Matt Stafford and turn your offense into a scoring machine. Mayfield fits what the Bucs are trying to do by being a balanced offense, aggressive defense and winning the turnover battle. But if you look at what Carr did in New Orleans. They thought he was the final piece to the puzzle and he wasn't because he didn't make that team better. And Mayfield isn't going to make the Bucs better. He'll get the most out of what's here, and that's worth a certain amount of money. How much is it worth? Not $40 mil.Well, perhaps you should read the article you are referencing.

Let him test the market and match. He's not leaving.

well yes I am definitely NOT defending the claim. I was actually pointing out that it’s meaningless because it’s just his opinion, no connection to a credible source.
That said, if you want to see why that stuff works lol, just look at the many posts in this thread. People don’t generally care about sources and so anyone can post their opinion and then other sites NEEDING CONTENT re-post it, then someone (in this case Fire) posts it in a message board … and the traffic driving “outrage fire” is off!!!
