Yeah this thread has devolved into ridiculousness. Darnold is out there for the tanking... er taking, so we'll just see which team wants to lose the most.I'll throw out another name. Sam Darnold.
Ewwwwwwww
But Mayfield's salary will be 10-15x more.
Darnold is most likely a veteran BACK UP in 2024, right?
With the Bucs, Mayfield would be the STARTER on a playoff team
They will probably BOTH be making the rough market rate for those two very different ROLES, right? That is the "10-15 more."
And that is because even thought they both (I think) tried the same approach* in 2023, there were very different outcomes.
And OF COURSE the Bucs are going to choose Mayfield over Darnold even at "10-15x more" because the Lombardi trophy goes to the WINNING team, not the team with them best contract value that season.
Darnold is your Luke McCown of 2024?
( * "Darnold signed a one-year, $4.5 million contract with the 49ers at the beginning of free agency a year ago at a time when it was unknown whether Brock Purdy would be ready for the start of the regular season. Lynch said Darnold could have gotten a better contract from other teams.")
Darnold really struck a nerve. Interesting. They each started 6 games on the same team. Pretty fair to compare.
Mayfield: 1-5, 6 TD/6 INTs, 6.4 YPA
Darnold: 4-2, 7 TDs/3 INTs, 8.2 YPA
They each started 6 games on the same team. Pretty fair to compare.

Now let's see the rest of Darnold's career stats.
I rather see the team roll the dice on Huntley than Darnold if that is the route the team goes. Huntley and Darnold are quick on their feet but Huntley is better at being consistent at moving the chains. Darnold doesn't make good use of his athletic gifts.

right on cue, Pat Kirwan
“Baker’s had his ups and downs. Yes, he deserves a starter’s contract. He’s going to get one,” Kirwan said. “How long is it going to be is an issue for me when I think about him and I don’t think I can put him in the elite status yet. I would built it into the back of end of [the contract], though. So if he keeps going, it keeps getting better. That’s how I would look at him. He deserves a starter deal; let’s call it $35 million [annually]. And if he does even better next year, it goes up to $40 million and then 43 or something like that.”

Why stop with that first round bust? You could go to Josh "Real Deal" Rosen, Mitch Trubisky, or Dwayne Haskins and would likely get similar responses.

Same year, but not the same team with multiple coaches being fired - largely because of poor play by Mayfield. Darnold certainly did come in and play better, so he gets the credit.
Darnold has a career 1:1 TD/INT ratio which is similar to players like Huntely and D. Lock. So I don't see the appeal with Darnold because what makes him stand out better than Huntley or D. Lock? In other words Huntley and Lock have shown they can lead a team to a comeback rally or even a comeback win. Darnold doesn't have that 2nd gear needed to win 4th quarter games or rally his team for a come back.

Arm talent and how he played in Carolina. Most of his work is with the Jets but they're a QB graveyard.
Sam Darnold is not the answer to ANY NFL teams’s starting QB question.
JC. Sam Darnold? come on man, did Baker sleep with your girlfriend or something?
if we can't retain Baker Mayfield, we should shift our focus to Russell Wilson or Kirk Cousins if we want to maintain in the playoff hunt. Any other option and we have no shot.
Looking at anywhere from 3 to 6 wins without one of those 3.
While Licht and Baker are dicking around with his new deal, perhaps Jason could shift gears for a minute and re-sign/extend a few of the other actual elite players on the team like Winfield, Wirfs, and David.
