JC.  Sam Darnold?  come on man, did Baker sleep with your girlfriend or something?

if we can't retain Baker Mayfield, we should shift our focus to Russell Wilson or Kirk Cousins if we want to maintain in the playoff hunt.  Any other option and we have no shot.

Looking at anywhere from 3 to 6 wins without one of those 3.

It's hypocrital to support Mayfield getting a big contract and then crap on Darnold as being a far cheaper option. They were on the same team and Darnold looked infinitely better. It shows a lack of critical thinking.

i hate to say it, but sometimes stats can be misleading and you are looking at such a small sample size

QB 1 - 67.2% completion percentage, 3,678 yards, 24 TDs, 7 INTs, 102.7 RTG

QB 2 - 64.3% completion percentage, 4,044 yards, 28 TDs, 10 INTs, 94.6 RTG

those QBs dont look too far off stat wise.  One was the reigning league MVP, the other is the guy that lives in your head.

Darnold looked good in the short stint against Baltimore on Christmas day.  Even better than Brock Purdy.  why dont you compare the two on that game.  Prefer Darnold over Purdy?

You all do realize that Baker may believe he's actually worth over $40M right? I mean Jones is being paid $40M. He probably also wants a multi-year deal that is heavily guaranteed while the Bucs would probably prefer a 2 year, maybe 3 year deal, with a smaller guarantee and the ability to move on if he falls back down to his more typical year. We'll find out soon enough.

The problem with paying a QB $40 mil per year is that it limits what the team can do for future re-signings or signing new players to the squad.  For that type of money that is a starting caliber edge rusher and starting caliber boundary CB.  A competent edge rusher opposite of Diaby and a boundary CB that can stay healthy and be ball hawk does a lot to improve the Bucs chances of winning games.  Throw in that this would allow the Bucs to cut/trade C. Davis and that freed up money can be used to extend Winfield and sign a safety opposite of Winfield to start.  Three defensive starters versus a QB at $40 mil per year is something to think about long and hard.

Something tells me that some team will make a crazy offer and that will price the Bucs out of the range IMO if Mayfield hits free agency.  Now it doesn't mean that Mayfield and agent will take the higher offers as they may weigh in the Bucs offer too.

I would think that everyone knows from the Combine which teams (if any) have expressed an interest and even the general terms they might off so the players wouldn't go to the tamper period unless they expected something that gives them leverage.  But, I agree that that does not necessarily mean they leave to the other team.

Cousins and Mayfield seem to both be on this type of plan

There's absolutely nothing wrong with Baker feeling that way.

I played Bay Hill twice last month and had consecutive rounds in the 70's. Now, if I believed I could go pro, does that make it true?

Yep. And Carr is getting $100M guaranteed. So, I'm sure Baker and his agent are on this line of thinking.

However, any GM worth a damn is also very aware that these were horrendous deals.

Baker has done nothing to justify these type of contracts. Just because other GM's have made this mistake doesn't mean JL needs to as well.

This is where I think the hold up is. The length and guarantee.

If Baker is looking for $75M-$100M in guranteed money, then let him hit the bricks.

If Baker is looking for 4+ years, then shake his hand and wish him the best. AWJ deuces.

He should get something in the Geno range, factor inflation, and that's it.

If he shows out over the next 2 seasons, then extend him to a lucrative deal. At that point, he would've actually EARNED it.

Even if we signed him to a 4yr/$160M deal. There would most likely only be one year where his cap hit was at $40M or higher. The issue is the dead cap, where we'd be eating the credit card bill after we dump him. And, with the way JL has been doing contracts the past few years, it would most likely be a decent-sized one.

12 QBs have an average contract value over $40M per year

additional 4 have over $30M

this screams $30 to $35M a year for baker

we are so use to Tom Brady taking less that we are discovering what most teams go through now (when their QB isn’t married to a damn near billionaire lmao)

if this is the case and these are past contracts (last couple years) then its not hard to imagine Mayfield with something in the high 30s to $40

You’ve said that multiple times, like Brady isn’t worth mid-to-high 9 figures on his own.

noted. Agreed

my point is more so Brady is filthy rich and prioritized having better talent around him so would take below market contracts.

other QBs, including borrow and mahomes, are trying to build their generational wealth, whereas Brady already had it for at least the last 10 years of his career.

so for fans expecting somebody like mayfield to be like Brady and “walk on water” as it comes to taking less, I’d be surprised if he did that knowingly. Because quite frankly, none of us would either. Again - unless we are billionaires (with the supermodel rich wife)

The sticking point is probably the guaranteed money because as we saw with the Evans contract the team is okay with doing a shorter deal.  After watching guaranteed money be thrown around with Wilson and Watson I don't mind that Licht is digging his heels in when it comes to not dishing out too much guaranteed money.

I think she “retired” almost a decade ago.

probably made more retired than Tom as a working stiff

I would think that to most players it’s all about guaranteed money, less so to the agents lol

I think length and guaranteed amount are the big sticking points, though the per year amount can only be around $30M for the Bucs to go with it. There's been a lot of desperate GM's out there dishing out big contracts for so-so QB's and I can see at least one team being dumb enough to offer Baker a 4 year deal worth $35-40M a year with over half guaranteed. And if someone does...he's as good as gone. While I understand the Bucs' thought process on wanting him back, I wouldn't be sad at all if he left as we can pick up a lot of key pieces with the money that would be saved by not resigning him. I am fairly certain that Atlanta is the team that's going to be dumb enough to give him roughly what he wants, and the situation might be a lot more stable for him since the coaching staff is new, and I think Baker is looking for stability whether it's here or somewhere else. He doesn't want to play on a short contract again, as he needs to make his money now and recover his loses while he's under 30.
