Again, if he's reasonable in the $25-$33 range, we get it done before he can look on the market.
pretty spot on? the way it played out
They were NEVER going to let him truly test the market because he was the lynchpin to much of their plans
holy shit, we owe Baker an apology and should up his salary to $40M :)

$40M would have been team crushing and spirit crushing if you read this thread.
The Bucs are in good hands with Licht. He's not perfect. No one is. But, he's made some good moves and he is a big part of building a team guys want to play for.
Could I see 3 years 100 million. Yes but that’s absolute highest at 33.3m APY
his floor is likely the 3 year 75 million and as DH said likely looking at 3 year 90 million as ballpark
Not sure if I ever said it, but good call.
Baker Mayfield projected at 4400 yds and 40 TDs and 71% completion rate. This offseason thread has Baker compared to many QBs :-)
QB is very often a product of the offensive system and team around him. I think Mayfield was about 60% completions last year. This year a lot of screens and short, quick passes.
Last year, Baker's completion%=64.5%
Hmm. Can't post the link to his pfr page for some reason. Anyway, all of his stats are better this season, significantly better. in most areas.
Read thru some of our earlier posts here, interesting thread…
Liam’s short/intermediate & heavy run influence game has helped a lot - both in neutralizing the rush, but also completion & passing stats - but there still has to be processing & execution. Great match for us at a time when all the cool teams are doing it - we weren’t on the outside looking in this time.
If they weren’t just downright lucky, you have to logically conclude that the organization is light years ahead of what many of us have had to endure. Meaning the front office is responsible for putting something special together.
Sure feels like we’re watching something unprecedented developing with this franchise.
Nice bump @bucsbits
On to Dallas.

I am a Canales fan, but you can really see the Coen difference. Mayfield deserves a lot of credit too
Almost any QB would love to have the run game we have. The defense is so often on its heels. Coen's mostly quick throw, short throw offense is great too and now they are starting to stretch it out a bit.
Fun to watch
Absolutely. I think we all agreed that Baker contract was a bargain compared to what Kirk Cousins got last year. IIRC, my argument was Cousins was the better player though overall, and that's why he got paid more. Fast forward now, Baker is having a way better year than Cousins. I do think Baker has a better supporting cast and coaching but Cousins simply did not play up to his contract the slightest.
In light of the Cousins benching thought to look back to see how our FRONT OFFICE did under a similar scenario.
To begin with, we went with Mayfield over Cousins (presumably) so the Mayfield deal was $100 million over 3 years, as compared to $180 million over 4. So, that is a Bucs front office WIN?
The Falcons plan with Penix sort of mirrors what we did with Trask. Licht specifically identified this dead cap period as one reason. I doubt the Falcons would be able to trade Cousins if they wanted to (they might not) given the no trade clause AND the size of the contract for a 37(?) year old struggling QB with an Achilles injury. So, they either have the most expensive back up or they cut him and take a $65 million dead cap hit over two years?
I thought the Brady dead cap hit was "only" $35 over two years?
So, that is Bucs front office WIN number two?
Of course, they won both games this season but we are in the lead presently, so I guess the COMPETITIVE outcome this season is still up in the air?
Cousins was the better player though overall, and that's why he got paid more.
agreed
It is the way of the NFL, looking in the past to pay for (and assess) future performance.
Dicey for an older QB right off an Achilles injury BUT all it takes is one and in this case there we a couple, reportedly.
Told you guys he was worth every penny. He should be getting $45M-$50M/yr.
The whole thread is a little absurd. Tons of hand-wringing over nothing. And of course TONS of trolling.
The Bucs were never going to "let him test the market" because they KNOW the market and the team was never going to truly over pay him to the exclusion of other players because, again, they know the market AND the very nature of his signing was to bring the team back, so much so he was tied to the OC selection.
Besides, the actual negotiating ranges in NFL contracts are very small because there is very limited number of players and even less agents, so everyone knows whose getting what and when and NO ONE has an interest in a contract that is an OBVIOUS outlier because that puts everyone under the microscope. In this thread there was a report of "negotiations" at $25m from the team against $45 from Mayfield and is still settled right where he is making good money (compared to the market) but not great and not bankrupting the team.
Disagree that Cousins is/was the better player, then/now. It can be argued that ATL paid Cousins for the production of better surrounding cast in Minnesota (ie, Sam Darnold’s emergence).
It’s pretty clear the Bucs got the better QB & contract, for the OC and the surrounding talent.
The surrounding cast also allowed the OC/assistant coaches (that o-line coach, especially)… to maximize production.
It’s definitely fun to watch - both our incredible offense and ATL’s seeming developing implosion - for Buccaneers fans!
Dallas is a bit more concerning after their dismantling of a Carolina team against which we struggled, but I seem to feel that way every Wednesday now.
Disagree that Cousins is/was the better player, then/now.
The Vikings got better and he got benched in ATL so you're probably right
