The opportunity cost for Atlanta is that they could have used that first round pick on a non QB (eg Verse) to improve their record by a game or two. Penix did help them reach a point where they had a shot at the playoffs at least.

But had they use that cap space on a non QB position to improve other areas of the roster and drafted Penix they might have ended up with the same or better record.

Basically they used their resources unwisely which is why most NFL teams either go all in with a QB via free agency or draft and then surround that QB with talent from the free agency or draft.

The Bucs on the other hand used their first rounder on Barton to protect Mayfield which was a smart use of resources.  The Vikings did use a first on JJ but they ended up signing two OLB that Atlanta could have used in Greenard and Van Ginkel and signed Darnold on the cheap. But Atlanta chose to spend that money on Cousins.

The misuse of draft and cap resources by the 2024 Falcons will be studied for years by many NFL teams.  Even if Penix turns out to have a good career too.

Isnt this because they sort of tried to exist in two worlds? Win now with Cousins and win later (hopefully) with Penix? That mixed approach kept them from "win now" arguably, for example by getting Verse.

I guess it ultimately comes down to how they do with Penix

The problem is that Penix can be a good QB for the remaining length of his rookie contract.  But the Falcons cap is shot so they can not take advantage of a cheap rookie contract that Penix is on currently to surround him with talent.  So not only they hurt their chance of success this season but for the next two seasons as well.

Funny discussion about Mayfield when you consider that this completely bogus rumor ($40 million) had people suggesting his contract would kill the team. All hail Licht!

"“Dollar for dollar, I’d say Baker Mayfield’s contract is one of the best values we’ve ever seen on a multi-year deal,” Florio said.

“… This was a three-year deal, low $30 million, the market’s at $60 [million]. It’s funny because I get feedback every once in a while from people with the organization that they’re not thrilled that they’re pointing out that they should pay Baker Mayfield. I think Baker Mayfield knows that he’s due to get a big raise because he’s exactly what you want in a quarterback.”

Maybe the big contract is coming though?

hahah you are far from the only one who was saying stuff like that and absolutely zero offense.

Mayfield has changed almost everyone's mind.  If you look back at the early takes on him, especially when Canales was here he WAS "consistently inconsistent."  Not he played that way, that was who he IS.  There is still some truth in that (the INT last game as an example) but overall everyone (myself included) underestimated his impact and that means form throwing the ball to leadership/.

And because of that the current contract is even MORE striking

The performance by "Emmitt Smith" yesterday might have sent him into permanent hiding?

Somewhere he is posting that Egbuka is actually overrated? Or that the Bucs owners forced Licht to draft him?

Bucs with a steal. Fair for Baker Mayfield was "Geno Smith" money.

Geno no longer with his team, moved to the Raiders.  This season so far Geno has 6 TD to 9 INTS, Baker is 10 TDs to 1 INT.

Incidentally, what does Pete Carroll think is the solution for the Raiders woes:

"“We have to run the football better, more,” Carroll said. “And we’re going to continue to work at it and see if we can’t continue to bring it to life. The running game has looked well in order right now, we need to get more of them. That’s part of it. That’s just mixing football. That’s how you do it. We don’t ever want to rely on the quarterback has to do the whole show, sitting in the shotgun, throw the football. Never coach that way. So we have to mix our stuff so we can use our play action game."

ESPN

"“We hear the ‘next man up’ thing all the time — It’s real there,” Schrager said of the Bucs. “Rachaad White’s in because Bucky Irving, who might be their best offensive player, is out.

“Mike Evans is out. Who steps up? Emeka Egbuka, of course. Sterling Shepherd is there. The offensive line has just been a carousel of names. Tristan Wirfs missed games early, and Cody Mauch and of course Luke Goedeke, he’s been out as well.

“And Baker doesn’t waver. They don’t waver. It’s five weeks in. We could do this week to week and change it. [Mayfield is] MVP five weeks into the season.

COULD ALL CHANGE ON A DIME, but . . .

yeah i mean ultimately it will be dependent how the team does and how the media darlings (Mahomes, Allen, Burrow, Jackson) do.  So far, the only one in the running there would be Josh Allen.

Bucs fumble this hot start and only win 10,11 games, then unlikely.  They would likely have to be in the 13 win category for him to have a reasonable chance

and as i said in another thread, they have 6 very winnable games remaining (NOX2,CARX2, ARZ, MIA) with 3 games that are home and should win those (ATL,SF,NE) with 3 tough road games (LAR, DET, BUF)

so law of averages, looking at 6-3 right off the bat which gets them to 10-4.  What do they do with the 3 winnable but toss up home games....guess we will find out this week.

a win, 5-1 and that 13 wins is in real play. A loss, and a fumble somewhere else and maybe we are 11-6 and not really MVP Caliber

i agree, Baker is a stud, just saying, they wont hand it out for a barely .500 team that benefits from a weak division.

If that noodle armed, injury prone wimp Tua is making 53 million a year, 40 for Baker is the deal of the century IMO.
