there are multiple reasonable reasons why Mayfield won the starter role
I don't think that's the case. I believe experience is the only reason.
I am still a Baker guy. He did not have a good game, but i would take him over about 22 other starting qbs in this league without question.
This quote from another Buc site sums Baker up perfectly--"Mayfield has looked good against bad teams and bad against good ones, which seems to be on-par for how he's played his entire career."
Losing to combined 10-2 teams is nothing to panic over. We will also lose to buffalo, 49ers and jaguars so just accept it now.
it’s all about how baker and the team bounce back this week. They win and all is well at 4-2 with 2 division wins. They lose and then yes the wheels can fall off quickly
I auess you mean because Trask is taller and maybe thats fair BUT the thing is that football isn't played one play (tipped pass on 1st down) in a vacuum, so does Trask survive opening day against Vikings and escape the rush and convert third downs like Baker had etc.
Not defending Baker just saying that there are multiple reasonable reasons why Mayfield won the starter role
Hard to tell, but having watched all of Trask's games with the Gators he had a knack for sliding around to avoid pressure at times. Other times he would just pull up and control how he went down. Seen a few times where he let himself get hit at speed while throwing the ball, but that wasn't the norm. I don't think he would have taken that sack Luke "gave up" where Baker backed into the sack. Because of his height, you see Mayfield bouncing around in the pocket a lot trying to create lanes to see and throw. Trask can stand there and see the whole field. Experience is really where Mayfield has him, but if he keeps having games like this, at some point you have to realize you've seen his ceiling and its not going to be winning football against good teams on most days.
As long as Mayfield wins most of the games, and fine with it, but if he isn't going to be able to do it in the playoffs against the better teams, then why bother? We need to see if Trask can develop into the guy, or draft someone who can if Mayfield can't do it long term. Hate to give him a ton of money this offseason and we never go anywhere with him at the helm and waste Trask and have to draft someone else while letting someone like Evans go to have the money to pay for Mayfield.
The wheels on the bandwagon have seized up!
Yeah, I think I'm about done with the Baker train. He's not running when he should. The roll outs are gone (they should have rolled him out on second down near the goal line at the end to force the defenders to either come off the receivers or let him run close to or into the endzone). He continues to throw off on most deep balls. The pass to Vaughn, that he should have caught, was high when a well-placed ball would have gone for chunk yards and a first. He throws a pick when he's got White wide open on the check down. He throws into coverage on the right side when he has Evans breaking free on the left sideline (nobody within 10 yards of him). It's not impossible that he may get on a roll and we can win some games, but we're not going anywhere with him at the helm and one more wasted year as an opportunity to see if Trask's quick growth in camp/pre-season can continue and make him the guy long term, or if he isn't, we can then draft one of the excellent QB's coming out this year.
I am beyond frustrated at this point. If he came out and we win that game going away, I'm feeling good that this team might have a slim chance at doing something in the playoffs. Now...it's pretty clear they'll be toast if they can even get in, which I'm doubting at this point. If they lose to Buffalo, which I'm sure they will, it's probably going to spiral. The life of a Bucs' fan.

Nice observations, well said.
If he plays like this again and the Bucs lose to Buffalo then it should be Trask vs Houston

Yes agree
The obvious reason Mayfield gets the nod is experience and the better decision-making that should flow from it. If that's not present then in an ideal world you make the switch.
Having posted that, its not an ideal world because its a business, and so as long as there is a glimmer of playoff hope there will be great pressure to keep Mayfield in as the starter.
I'm afraid he (Baker Mayfield) IS who we thought he was.....he's failing his trial run here. I think he'll be someone's back up next season, just not here.
I'm officially done with his ass. He played scared the whole game. Failed to hit guys that were open, again. Threw about a dozen passes late. Just tired of it.
he was never gonna be the guy. too many teams passed on him for a reason. hes the common denominator
@bucharbour--Threw about a dozen passes late.
This is what puzzles me about Baker. It seems he's reluctant to pull the trigger. I guess it could be because he's playing for another contract and doesn't want to commit turnovers.
He's missing all those open receivers because he can't see them. He's too short in the pocket, has to be absolutely clean to get the ball out, and then he's late or inaccurate.
The Bucs need to find out what they have in Trask. Houston would be a good place to start.
