Could also just franchise him worst case scenario
from a business perspective, shit, we know we aint losing Baker. He has another year left on his $33M deal and we can franchise
But given the high class of this franchise, im almost certain they extend him this offseason - particularly with how he has played and kept us fighting without Evans, Godwin, Bucky, or Geodeke for most of the season.
So they should let him walk and draft an unknown guy and pray he's good?
Good odds. Only took this franchise a half century to find "our guy"
When you find your guy, you re-sign him. That's the way Licht has operated his entire tenure. I have zero doubt Baker is not retained long term. Zero.
The organization built a line for Brady, who understood that he wasn’t the kind of QB who was going to leave the pocket - and therefore needed skill positions that required investment. We drafted Tristan Wirffs with the idea of eventually moving him to LOT.If Baker is healthy there's no question he'll be well worth the money. but the Tom Bradys and Matthew Staffords can play until they're old and gray because they don't take a lot of hits. Baker takes a beating and he's going to get hurt again and again. It's just the way he plays. And nobody on this team is telling him to change his style of play. We love it. Fans love it. Players and coaches love it. His body doesn't love it.Top 10 QB’s are expensive.good QB’s are expensive. You’re going to pay them, or you’re going to lose, a lot.
When we lost our all-pro Center, Brady started feeling more pressure and infected his game.
Baker is effective at scramble drills because he was not expected to run much by our opponents, that’s more of a recent development, due to the horrific amount of time our o-line has NOT had all their starters - but also because of the injuries to our starting WR1, WR2, and War3.
So Baker’s scramble drills are more of an option if we’re trailing. It isn’t necessarily part of his game. I think as the line stabilizes, Baker will be able to take advantage of that stabilization by being able to see more of the field.
Besides, how many games has Baker missed due to injury?
Also, Baker hasn’t been able rely on a dominating rushing attack, partly because of the previously noted o-line deficiencies, but also because our leading rusher has also been out for 7 weeks. So Baker HAD to take more risks to win games and stack those 5 earlier, come-from-behind victories.
You don’t penalize that, you reward it. You hope to negotiate down from $300 mil in order to add weapons & protections for Baker. He’s shown that to be a consideration in last negotiations, but he also knows the Bucs got 2 previous undervalued contracts.
Like I said, really good QB’s are expensive. We’ve got one, and we’re going to eventually pay him what the market says he’s worth - cuz other teams would be happy to help if we don’t.
Again, how many games has he missed as a Buccaneer?
Direct your prayers toward Baker being good when his next contract kicks in. He's got a year and a half left on his current deal. An extension won't start until 2027.So they should let him walk and draft an unknown guy and pray he's good?
They let Jameis walk. They found Brady. Brady callled it quits. They dug Baker off the scrap heap. Let Baker walk. Yes- Find the next one.
If you think three years, four years from now Baker Mayfield will still be as productive as he is now then of course happily give him the $$$$ . Everybody assumes that except me of course. We're going to find out, because he'll get his deal and it will be very close to the going rate of the market for a top five QB whatever you want to say that is. And I'll be happy to be proven wrong if he plays at full strength for 75% of those games.
T
I beg to differ. Scrambling is definitely part of his game. When he does scramble he's trying to get to the first down marker even if somebody is in his way. Baker hasn't missed any games due to injuries, but being hurt has affected his play. But he'll be well into his 30s during this new contract. Will the hits he takes now and in the coming years come to roost a few years from now? Will he be as resilient then?If Baker is healthy there's no question he'll be well worth the money. but the Tom Bradys and Matthew Staffords can play until they're old and gray because they don't take a lot of hits. I'd be OK with that. That would be two more years after this year when he's in his prime. Don't see that being the outcome though.Could also just franchise him worst case scenario
You start a thread wringing your hands about extending only the 2nd starting QB to win a playoff game in the last 10 years, winner of 2 division titles (working on 3), a 2x pro-bowler for this team - who currently has manufactured 4 come from behind victories, with a 6-3 record, while not playing with his top 3 WR’s, his leading rusher, and behind an o-line that has yet to field all the starters at the same time?I'd be OK with that. …then you pivot and conclude Licht could just tag him - as if that would be sound logic?
I honestly try to read your stuff and give you the benefit of the doubt, but you post stuff like this and I just can’t understand where you come up with this stuff.
We’d be smart to enxtend Baker, soon. As I don’t think you’re aware that the longer you wait, the more expensive starting QB’s get. You don’t have to think he’s the best QB you’ve ever seen, but you also would have to be blind not to see what a healthy Mayfield means to this team.
Also, mentioning Fameous in the same post as Tom Brady and Baker Mayfield tells me more than you intended when you typed it…
We built a line for Brady, augmented it for Baker - in order to keep winning games, and have a shot at a series of playoff wins and a serious playoff run this season and next… and you’re worried about extending him?
Nutz.
Bottom line:
Most things you don't realize how good you had it till it's gone

Fixed it for you
(agreed on the football )
Well, I realize how good we have it. So what's your point?Bottom line:

Maybe that this is wrong?
(1) Go back to the scrap heap again. (2) Draft a QB. (3) Something.
I cant recall us ever losing a FA we wanted to money. The Baker extension will be market price and that is probably big BUT somehow it will all work out.
We're going to find out, because he'll get his deal and it will be very close to the going rate of the market for a top five QB whatever you want to say that is.
Wait.
You were saying he'd get 5 years at $300M and that it would be guaranteed.
So which it is?
Yes. Almost all guaranteed. By that I mean 80% or so.We're going to find out, because he'll get his deal and it will be very close to the going rate of the market for a top five QB whatever you want to say that is.

You were saying he'd get 5 years at $300M and that it would be guaranteed.
So which it is?
Josh Allen six years 350 mil with 250 guaranteed.
Dak Prescott 4 years at $60 mil per almost completely guaranteed.
Brock Purdy 5 years $265 mil with $181 mil guaranteed.
Joe Burrow 5 year 275 mil with 217 guaranteed. That was signed in 2023. Three years later - you don't think the market has gone up? You don't think Baker will get top 5 money? I guess we'll find out this offseason.
Since you want clarity I'll lay it out for you. Baker will get 5 years, $300 mil with 240 guaranteed. That's 80%. Some of that guarantee could be in the form of easy to earn roster bonus like Wirfs got.
Since apparently you disagree, what do you think his numbers will be?
