I don’t think I’ve been trying to polish any turds here, just some earnest head scratching.I’m not sure why constant excuses are offered for Mayfield’s shortcomings, be it for deep passes or batted balls. Why is it so difficult for some to put blame on him? He’s a flawed player that has both excellent games and dogshit games. Consistently inconsistent, with multiple Head Coaches, Offensive Coordinators, Offensive Lines, Skill Players, and Defenses. It’s not some huge mystery. It’s who he is and has been as an NFL QB. At this point, you just hope to see more of the good than the bad.
It’s fair to give him credit for good play and blame for bad play.
if I was trying to polish turds, I wouldn’t have to travel far down the depth chart.
have I tweaked folks for the rampant & obvious Baker/hate? Absolutely. If you take that as turd polishing, that’s up to you. I’m as over that discussion as you seem to be.
All QB’s have that, if you’re capable of starting for more than a few games, you have something that makes you special. If you’re not consistent, you’re part of the 70% of starting QB’s in the NFL. Serious folks aren’t trying to turn Mayfield into Steve Young, Lamar Jackson, or Mahomes - but he’s also not Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota, or Kyle Trask.
i think I know who he is, and I think we can win with him, but the trenches are going to have to be improved, we need a RB1 and the secondary needs help - not sure it all gets done this draft but a fare bit of it will be addressed. This is an lunchpale larry team now, and we’re just going to have to get used to it.
what did you think the mortgage payment was going to be for that big shiny GOAT we bought that brought home some glitter - then promptly ate all the Bermuda in the front lawn?!
Look, I get it. I’ve gone off the deep end myself - as you may recall - checked out negativity at a whole different level. Bitterness stokes you for awhile. Pretty soon it leaves you sitting in a room all by yourself…
Like I said, Baker ain’t that bad, we can win more than we lose with him, so long as the team is improved around him.
Ain’t no cavalry coming to save us.

Preach.
Any criticism whatsoever, including well documented ones (including from the media, pundits, etc.), leads to the window-licking comments like “Baker Hater”.
Though, I find it ironic that his most staunch supporters are the 2-4 posters who “magically” appeared after the end of the season.
Nowhere to be found during the 2023 campaign.
Weird…
It’s fair to give him credit for good play and blame for bad play.
MAN ^^^^^ talk about BREATHTAKING HYPOCRISY . . BREATHTAKING
"good run, there were probably 4 guys open."
You should "preach" to your own people.
If you are a JUST a Bucs fan (ie more of a Buc fan than a Gators or than your own self-described "football acumen") you really had to endure some incredibly over the top bashing and crying about Mayfield EVEN AS WE APPROACHED AND ACTUALLY ENTERED THE PLAYOFFS LARGELY BASED ON HIS PLAY . . . including in the GAME DAY THREADS where there were multiple quote debates about Canales versus Mayfield lol
Biggs, you actually wanted to sit Mayfield in October, but later LIED about that, presumably because it is INCONSISTENT with understanding football. You guys -- the Gator fan Trask group - HILARIOUSLY had to keep repeating that the playoffs were meaningless because OTHERWISE there was no way to JUSTIFY the insane bashing. So, much so that you Biggs . . . . YOU, the author of that BS posted i quoted above lol . . that YOU had to HILARIOUSLY admit that you didnt realize the Bucs were a YOUNG TEAM because you previously argued that the playoffs WOULD matter if only the Bucs were a young team. LOL
I dont think there is a REGULAR or LONGTIME posters here (who YOU would call a "Baker Bros") who doesn't think that Mayfield is inconsistent? I thin everyone of them ACKNOWLEDGE that. We are actually TALKING about it before your post lol. Trying to UNDERSTAND WHY is not excusing it, its trying to understand wht SHORT Mayfield has only a tiny fraction more battled balls than 6' 5 Newton) Instead, the REGULAR or LONGTIME posters here all seem to post that he GREATLY exceeded expectations last year and really MOTIVATED and led the team
Badabinga
WT
FIRE
Me
etc.
NOT ONE denying his inconsistency, right?
LMAO
(Biggs, there is NO WAY that the guy who posts "shameless" and "lack of self- awareness" so much does NOT know that post I quoted above was a TROLL lol. Either that or you are PROJECTING lol)
Biggs, if one thing should be clear its that I think you are a troll. LMAO. A hilariously inept, Keystone Cops version of a troll, but a TROLL nonetheless.
During the season I STILL regularly CREDITED you for your phrase that mayfield is "consistently inconsistent" because its TRUE. Multiple regular posters adopted that description of the guy. I think every person here (other than the people who appeared here as true Mayfield fans) says OPENLY that he's inconsistent
He's still the best that we have . . .
Most of you admit there is no real alternative and WILL NOT say what you think Trask would have done as a starter last season or going forward
that didnt stop the bashing lmao
This is a self-described LONG-TIME POSTER and outspoken Trask fan begrudgingly giving mayfield credit AFTER the Jaguars win:
I won't root against him as he is fun to watch play at times.
ROFLMAO
will not root against him (he's the BUCS QB?!). . fun to watch . . at times.
look in that same thread, later on in the post-mortem. Badabing refers to Mayfield as one of Licht's best signings (obviously) . .. .
:-)
I ‘show up’ (post) around draft time.
Mostly because, it gets interesting, then. If that chafes, I don’t much care.
Sounds like I didn’t miss much. The unrelenting bashing of a QB who actually used skills that none of the available QB’s, on the roster, or were available FA’s, had.
Like I said, ain’t no cavalry coming…no QB draft picks, no FA’s, yet because of Baker Mayfield, we were able to generate enough wins, that we not only won the South, made it to the playoffs, but won a playoff game - at home - against a HATED Philly rival, and were competing to the end of the divisional game!?
There were years we would have been ecstatic about that.
That should have made the few doubters reassess - yet it doesn’t appear the few, can? Why?
I gave the benefit of the doubt, but that’s the kind of thing that makes me wonder if the few were actually wanting us to turn to…the 2nd string QB when it was clear, the coaches didn’t think he was as good as the guy they kept starting?
That’s what’s Weird.
This thread is a NOW pristine example of Biggs the Troll. It was a football discussion, but now it's about the posters. . . and Biggs is the turning point.
Three or four posters (some Mayfield fans, some critics) talking about some of Mayfield's weaknesses, the featured one being batted balls. It's a football discussion.
One of my last posts from that FOOTBALL discussion even highlights Mayfield's . . . INCONSISTENCY lol
I just saw a PFF snippet from early on his career that had him as BOTH the league leader in uncatchable balls and the league leader in perfect throws, so there is some of that inconsistency.
In comes Biggs to move from FOOTBALL to POSTERS:
Why is it so difficult for some to put blame on him?
ROFLMAO
That pattern exists in nearly every thread involving Biggs lmao.
Badabing is a "dope," and "some" cant put the blame on him . . right after posts calling him inconsistent. lol
That should have made the few doubters reassess - yet it doesn’t appear the few, can? Why?
Because this “doubter” is looking at his ENTIRE body of work.
Not an outlier season.
“Consistently Inconsistent” is, and has been, Baker in a nutshell.
Hopefully, he breaks the trend this upcoming season.
“Consistently Inconsistent” is, and has been, Baker in a nutshell.
yes I think you can even see that in the early (Browns?) PPF stuff I referenced.
I will try to find the actual link again, but being the top in UNCATCHABLE and PERFECT lol. Wild
One thing . . and not an "excuse," just discussing . . is that sometimes a player like Mayfield does better when thinking less, so wide open early deep ball becomes tougher than late game deep ball.
He clearly has an arm and I read that Canales message to him was literally "let it rip," so maybe thats part of it. Who knows?
BC - while I am inclined to agree with the take that Baker will continue to be mercurial, I believe the quote you reference was attributed to Todd Bowles telling Canales to “let it rip, I’ve got you…” may have been related to Baker, but that’s the reference I read. One thing . . and not an "excuse," just discussing . . is that sometimes a player like Mayfield does better when thinking less, so wide open early deep ball becomes tougher than late game deep ball.

I just read that too. I may have it mixed up but I thought during the season that I read about Canales basically saying same thing? Could definitely be wrong. I know I read Mayfield saying Canales told him to just be himself
Yeah, I think Baker throwing for 4,044 yards, 28 TD’s, and TWO receivers with over 1000 yards - in the regular season, buttress your point
I don’t think I’ve been trying to polish any turds here, just some earnest head scratching.
To be fair, you were the one who brought up the OL excuse in the batted balls discussion. Mayfield has had issues with batted balls across multiple teams and OL’s.
Like Chris Simms before him, it’s a Baker Mayfield problem. Hopefully one he improves upon.
OL excuse in the batted balls discussion
Just an observation, maybe? It is LEGITIMATELY a reason for batted balls.
Here you can find a D-lineman talking about the OFFENSE LINEMAN and offense as a reason for batted balls.
https://steelersdepot.com/2021/11/keith-butler-on-the-secret-for-d-linemen-batting-down-passes/
He actually mentions something that Mayfield does a lot in his role -- QUICK RHYTHM PASSING - no mater which team. Literally what Canales said over and over, hit back foot and throw
Here is another D-linman saying its the QB's eyes (a point DH made, I think)
Everything posted here is NOT and "excuse." Tts NOT all "us versus them." Its not 'baker bros" versus "Trask Bros."
