Bobby Rainey Earning Pay-Day This Summer With Tampa Bay Buccaneers December 12, 2013 11:46 am EST by Cody Williams Kim Klement – USA Today Sports Images When Bobby Rainey started the 2013 NFL season with the Cleveland Browns, he was never really able to break through as the go-to guy in their rushing attack. Over his six games with Cleveland, Rainey amassed just 13 total carries for only 34 yards behind Trent Richardson and Willis McGahee before being sent to waivers. Rainey was then claimed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers off of waivers after Doug Martin’s injury. Then, when rookie Mike James also went down with injury, Rainey finally got the opportunity to prove that he’s worth his salt. He’s done more than that since getting the bulk of the workload in Tampa. While he played backup to James in week 10, he still racked up 45 yards on eight carries and a score in that game. In his five games where he’s touched the ball for the Bucs, he’s been fantastic. On 95 carries, Rainey has 433 yards on 95 carries with 18 of those carries going for first downs and four of them going for scores. His 4.6 yards per carry average is certainly another testament to his work. The offensive line in Tampa has been solid as of late which has certainly aided Rainey, but the second-year back that went undrafted in 2012 has been running hard and smart behind this line. He’s been a big part in the Bucs finally being able to grab wins in recent weeks, with the Bucs sitting at 3-1 in his three starts. Sure, he’s had two games with less than 65 yards rushing, but those two games also happened to come against the first and sixth ranked run defenses in the NFL this season. With Martin and James returning for next season and Rainey’s contract being up, it’s hard to imagine he won’t be going elsewhere this summer. If he can continue to run this well to finish the season, it’s hard to not imagine him getting a nice pay-day to play for a team like the Browns (again) or New York Jets that need some life at the position. He’s been solid, now all he has to do his finish strong to make himself some real money this offseason.Read more at http://www.rantsports.com/nfl/2013/12/12/bobby-rainey-earning-pay-day-this-summer-with-tampa-bay-buccaneers-this-season/?SkJsYPR3ofRs6w3i.99
This is unlikely to happen.Running backs are greatly devalued in today's NFL and there have been plenty of good backs that sat around in the off season waiting for a team to give them a call. Couple that with the fact that teams feel that they can find running talent in almost any round of the draft and it's not hard to imagine Rainey, if not signed by the Bucs, just getting a very modest contract somewhere. Few running backs now get big money contracts. My guess is that Rainey will sign back with the Bucs for next season. I'm not sure, but I think he might even be an exclusive rights free agent anyway, so Bobby might not have any choice anyway.

I do think you are right about this. I think Rainey stays in Tampa.
Its not going to happen unless the Bucs trade him. Rainey is an exclusive rights free agent which means he can only play for the UNLESS they decide other wise.

Yea you right I'm pretty sure also he's an exclusive rights free agent also. So if anyteam wants him there going to have to give up a draft pick for him. We probably won'tput any tender less then a second on him so doubtful he would get picked up by another team. We will have a lot of depth next year with our rbs. With Martin James and Rainey. They're all different kind of backs which is good if we use them correctly.
If we could get a middle round pick for him that would be lovely .
He is a 2nd year player and has no rights. We own him for another two years. He can't go anywhere unless the Bucs decide they don't want him. Stupid article. Way to go USA Today.
This year is a good reason of why we should not trade him. He's good, he's cheap, and should be a buc next year as well.
This line is set up for the run, the coach is in love with a solid rungame, and all of the rb's are very shifty with their movements. So it goes without saying, just about any back will look alright to great in this system. Trading off any of them, including martin isn't a big deal. Especially if the glazers don't have the balls to fire schiano.
I would keep Martin, James, Rainey and Lorig. Very solid. I would cover an injury to Lorig with an Hback type TE either as a third string TE or on the practice squad. RB is one position we are very solid
Just to play devils advocate, the staff might want to give the young man a chance to make a name for himself somewhere else. Trade him for a late round pick. Then roll with Doug, Smith, James.
Frankly he has one good game and one big run. He's not cashing in on that. Teams are way, way past overpaying RBs.
He is a helluva nice kid, and him and his girl just had a little one. When he got here in town, he didn't have 2 nickels to rub together. So they may let him go, give him an opportunity to make a little money. They won't part with Doug, or Smith or Mike. IMO
Smith over Rainey? Why?
Who else is going to be the captain of the Sunday Inactives all star team?
