Read/hear somewhere recently the Bucs can restructure Brady’s deal to lower the dead cap hit. Don’t understand how that’s possible considering he’ll technically be a FA (was only a 1 yr deal which will expire) can anyone please explain if that’s possible and how. And what the new dead cap hit would look like. Thanks

They don't eliminate the $35 mil hit, but they can spread it out and push some of the hit into future years.   So the question is how much do the Bucs really want to spread it out? I'm guessing they will want to make Todd Bowles happy and spread it out a little bit.  Licht isn't going to just say "Sorry, Todd.  We're going to bite the bullet, so I'd suggest updating your Linked-in page! LOL"

But here's the question:  If Brady plays for another team, they can't defer his contract.  So, the Patriots want him to sign a one-day contract to retire as a Patriot.  If he did that, what would be the impact on the Bucs ability to defer part of the cap hit?

they can spread $24M of the $35M to next year if they so choose

the question becomes...will they want too?

if they roll with Trask and a bridge QB (Gabbert, Mayfield, Brisset, Heinke, Minshew, etc.) then why not just eat the cap this year and start fresh in 2024.

if they trade for Aaron, Carr, or sign Jimmy G...then yes, let's defer and try to make the playoffs

They have to throw a bone to Bowles.  They can eat most of it, but they have to defer at least a portion of it just to show Bowles they aren't throwing in the towel for 2023.    Also, they have some good veteran players on this team.   Vea, Godwin, Evans.  And they have an offensive tackle being talked about as a future hall of famer who is coming up for contract negotiations soon.  You can't send those guys the message that you are tanking the season.  So I'd push off a third of it, and eat two thirds.

OK.  That get rid of 12 million of the 55 million the bucs are over the salary cap. What Ideas do you have of getting rid of the other 43 million?

Well I'll get right on that.  cut/trade Donovan Smith $10 mil, cut Succop $4 mil, cut Fournette (June 1st) $6 mil, cut/restructure Mason $5 mil, restructure Davis $5 mil, Godwin restructure $5 mil,  cut Brate (June 1) $ 3.5 mil, Restructure Evans $ 4.5 mil.  Charge players $4 for bottles of water.  That's about $43 mil.  Then you need to pull $8 mil out of your butthole to pay Gardner Minshew.  Problem solved!

The point is, the Bucs aren't going to just "bite the bullet", because they aren't tanking the season.  You can think they should, but they don't think they should.   But they can't push off so much that 2024 is as bad or worse as 2023.  They have to try to dig out of the hole.

Don’t think Bucs ownership owes Bowles much of anything. He inherited a team with second highest Super Bowl odds and under his leadership they had a losing record. Other factors at play no doubt, but the guy is clearly on the hot seat and I guess we’ll find out what they decide.

as a fan, unless they get 1 of the QBs I mentioned, we would only delay the inevitable by not taking our medicine this year.

guess we’ll find out
