So, I decided to have a really good look at Winston's two INT's to Talib last Sunday. I have broken them down into three sections. The QB, the WR, and the play call.
The QB. First INT was intended for Humphries. The ball should have never been thrown. Humphries was double covered.
The WR Humphries. At first glance it looks like Humphries gave up on the route, but as you can see on film he was actually held by No.25 which prevented him from making a break on the ball. He was not where he was supposed to be on the play due to the hold. Not sure how much blame to assign to Humphries but its clear he cant get open vs. Man coverage by an NFL corner. That is a bigger issue for another thread.
The Play call. Humphries was double teamed on the play and both of the defenders read the play perfectly. This was something that they had obviously seen on film and they were ready for it.
Second INT was intended for VJ. The QB again should not have thrown the ball. There were too many Broncos in the area.
The WR. The 4 vert offense is predicated on the sideline comeback routes. If you watch closely VJ never makes a strong comeback move. For a vet like him I expect more. VJ if he had run his route could have at least broke the pass up.
The play call. Again it was as if Talib was in our huddle. He recogbized the route and jumped it. He was in underneath coverage and it appears that he knew better than the WR where the ball was going.
To sum it up. Foe Winston, accuracy was not the problem. If the WR's had been where they should have been these INT's would not have happened. Rather, over confidence by our young QB was his issue. He should not have been trying to throw these balls into tight windows. Unfortunately the Denver defense will only give you tight windows to throw into. We were simply overmatched on all 3 aspects of these INT's
