Tampa Bay Buccaneers schedule workout with Texas A&M Aggies Nate AskewSI.com Mar 10th, 20144.45 forty at Pro Day Texas A&M Aggies linebacker Nate Askew took a leap of faith this past year at College Station. Recruited to play receiver, Askew made the switch from offense to defense prior to the 2013 season. "It took a day," said Askew to decide on making the switch. "Went straight home talked to a few people, called my mom and things like that." Askew also took the advice from a few teammates New York Giants Damonte Moore and Cincinnati Bengals Sean Porter. They encouraged Askew to go ahead, because the NFL can use a guy like him at the position. "If you would have told me I would be playing in the NFLPA Game as a linebacker I would have laughed," Askew said about the quick transition and success that came with it. During his freshman through junior seasons, Askew was used sparingly catching nine passes over that period. His senior season at linebacker Askew played in all 12 games at linebacker, starting at Arkansas and against Missouri. He recorded 33 stops on the year, with 22 solo tackles. He also ranked second on the team with two interceptions. His recent Pro Day is where Askew showed his athleticism and shined for NFL Scouts. At 6'3 and 241 pounds, he posted a 4.45 forty, which would top any time recorded at the position from the recent NFL Scouting Combine. Afterwards, he talked with several NFL teams including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Carolina Panthers, Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers. Apparently he impressed the Buccaneers enough they want to see more of him. "Basically it seemed like they really liked me a lot," said Askew. "I actually gotta go workout for them when Johnny (Manziel) and Mike (Evans) have their Pro Day on the (March) 27th. I have to come back and workout for their linebackers coach." Upside, upside, upside. Looking at Askew moving forward it is what NFL teams are going to like the most. One year under his belt and he's invited to a college all-star game after playing in the SEC, those are solid contributors to his talent. "My athleticism definitely," Askew said are what scouts are going to like about him most. "I feel like me playing receiver gave me an edge moving to linebacker. I feel like there is no other linebacker as athletic as me. Not to be cocky, but my numbers show it." Askew, is far from being cocky, just humble confidence about him and his engaging personality. There is more Askew wants scouts to know about him during this critical evaluation step where NFL teams dissect every player for both their positives and negatives. "I can pass rush," Askew said about the biggest thing that goes unnoticed about his abilities. "Pass rush is what I love to do. Because of our defense at A&M the coaches figured I could cover, so I was in coverage a lot. I really didn't get to show that aspect of my game. That's what I want scouts to know is that I can pass rush." Who better to watch and learn from than Denver Broncos Von Miller and Aggies alum. Askew said he spent hours watching tape of when Miller was at Texas A&M. The future NFL rookie said Miller is one of the players he tried to mold his game after as he prepares for the next level.
